Can't be done IMO, accepting yourself is the way to go.

True and old self is only a small aspect of self. Self is without limits?

you are constantly trasnscending yourself. everyday you have new experiences and pick up new infomration and insights, you are constantly changing and becomming more than you were before. compare yourself now to when you were 10 years old and think about how many times you have self transcended.

Quote:

Transcend:
1  a : to rise above or go beyond the limits of
b : to triumph over the negative or restrictive aspects of :
c : to be prior to, beyond, and above (the universe or material    existence)

2 : to outstrip or outdo in some attribute, quality, or power
intransitive senses : to rise above or extend notably beyond ordinary limits

I think it is possible to transcend the known self, as that is fluid and ever-changing.  What we cannot transcend is having a self, as it seems to be the ticket to embodiment.  (You want a body?  You want to experience the material plane?  Gotta have a self.)

Accepting the fact of your self, as opposed to accepting the specific details of the enactment of that self, is a powerful and graceful action.  :sun:

I read it and thought it contained several conflicting ideas.
I'll elaborate later.

" Everything I am trying to become I was when a child."

I wholeheartedly agree. Nakedness. It is about unlearning and unwinding in my opinion.

We are like elephants thinking that if we only could put on a couple of extra pounds, everything would be better. A wise man said something like that in the wonderful movie One Giant Leap which I strongly recommend.

Tom Robbins tells a great story in that movie. A monk was going to meet the buddha and as he went on his way he met this ascetic who sat meditating under a tree. He was seated in the sun and fusing in sweat and ants and bugs were eating his skin. As the monk told him he was going to meet the Buddha, the ascetic said "ask the Buddha how many lifetimes it will take before I will reach enlightenment."

The monk agreed to do so and continued on his walk. A little later he came upon a man dancing in joy. He was eating food from a bowl, sipping a little wine and jumping all over the place, totally blissed out. As the monk told him where he was going, that man also said "ask the Buddha how many lifetimes it will take before I become enlightened."

The monk agreed to do so, and went onward. He met the Buddha and had his talk. On his way back he came upon the ascetic first. The ascetic asked mournfully how many lives he had left. The monk said the Buddha had told him that it would take him six more lifetimes to become enlightened. The ascetic became absolutely devastated and continued even harder in his efforts.

A little later the monk met the joyous dancing man who still was bopping madly around the place. "How many lifetimes do I have left?" he asked.

The monk pointed to a nearby tree and said: "Do you see all the leaves on that tree? The Buddha says it will take you as many lives as there are leaves on that tree to reach enlightenment."

"Is that all!?" the dancing madman exclaimed and started celebrating even harder.

And at that moment he became enlightened.

i think you're missing the point. you can now do many things you could not do when you were 10 years old and you can do many of the things you could do then, better. envision a peice of software which is continually updated. it will have transcended itself many times by the time it reaches version 10.0 compared to version 1.0. veritas kindly posted the definition of transcend which read:

"2 : to outstrip or outdo in some attribute, quality, or power"

i think its safe to say we've all outdone ourselves in some aspect as we've grown and matured. for example, i am now a far better tennis player than i was when i first began playing.

According to the essay, one should dislike certian aspects of him/herself, such as delusion, ignorance, etc, while still accepting him/herself. ("cultivate the wholesome tendencies and uproot the unwholesome ones") This seems incoherent. One cannot say "yes" and "no" at the same time. Refusing to like a part of oneself is synoynmous to not accepting that part. Can you accept the whole without accepting the parts?

Rather than categorizing the self into dualistic sets of likes and dislikes, one should accept the whole of oneself, realizing it is impossible to eliminate klesa or ignorance. You may learn something, which will eliminate specific ignorances, but ignorace, as a whole, will always remain.

even if you eventually lose the abilities you gained (and eventually you will lose them), you still self transcended many times.

I think you're talking about transending your personality structure. And to that I agree with you.

But to me that is of minor importance, and the truest nature of the self cannot be transended because it is connected to everything that is .

Isn't that exactly what being like a newborn is about. Pre-conditioning?

"But to me that is of minor importance, and the truest nature of the self cannot be transended because it is connected to everything that is."

Not only connected, but it is what it is. I AM THAT.
