Is this water or bacterial? (3/18 update)
    #572195 - 03/07/02 02:01 AM (22 years, 26 days ago)

I have the worst luck w/ rye. I have these jars that are looking really good except for these spots. I have had other jars start w/ these and then I get bacterial bloom. Any opinions?

What am I thinking, everyone's got an opinion:).

I would definitely say water for the first pics.
I would say water as well for the last pic, but when I see water without mycelium, it often (always) turns to contamination. But you may be lucky, and this water may just be water. We have to wait in order to give you the final result. But you'll have it before us. I would be interested to see the evolution.

That last pic really looks like wet spot; The brownish color is usually a giveaway as the bacteria is digesting and metabolizing the grain--the 'greasy' appearance talked about often.
The good news is that unless it gets bigger quickly the mycelium should kick its ass.
Rye always did that to me, unfortunately to a much greater degree!

Looks like wetspot to me. Try incubating the jar at 65-70F and see if it overgrows the bare areas. Lower temperatures often give the mycelium the advantage over the bacteria. Don't shake the jar or all is lost.

And I thought all was lost...

I still see a couple of wet spots like before. Is it safe to use as spawn? I have some other jars that definatly have bacterial bloom. I am going to see if they can be treated w/ H2O2.

Ok, good recovery. You may have a mycelium stimulating bacteria as a contaminate. You can easily case that grain and get good results. You may be able to spawn compost without problems since the mycelium seems to be able to handle the weak contamination. Certain bacteria can enhance yields and stimulate early fruiting.
