no growth with rye
    #5721280 - 06/06/06 11:31 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

its been 5 days since i inoculated my quart sized jars of rye. they have been in my tit at about 83 degrees. i heated the needle of the syringe with my lighter and cooled with alcohol as usual and shook the jars a bit so the top berries were thoroughly displaced. i only put in 1cc of spore solution per jar, perhaps this wasn't enough? i have had several successful rye grows already so i am rather familiar with it.

edit: typo, whoops!

Could be water content.

10cc sounds a bit too much for a quart jar. Try 2-4cc.

Turn your jar upside down. If you can visually see water run to the top of the jar, then your water content is off.

If not, then have patience. I would wait 7-14 days to see signs of germination.

there is a little condensation on the sides of the jars (above the rye, of course) after they have been sitting for a while, but no streams of liquid. i guess i am being a little anxious, its just never taken this long with rye.

I recently had the same problem....

I was informed by Magash about the diffrence between organic rye and treated rye unfortunently for me I had bought treated rye and was pondering for almost a month why their was no growth even though the Liquid cultures had demonstrated significant growth.

So, my conclusion is you bought treated rye or, it was treated and they just slapped a organic tab on it.

Make up a couple PF test jars and sterilize them (keep them in your fridge) to test out your spores....or make up a liquid culture, lc's usaully show signs of myc within 48 hours. Hope that helps, take it easy.

its the same kind of rye that was used, successfully, on all the previous rye experiments. bought from a massive organic/hippy food store called whole foods. my guess is that not enough spores were used and that is why its taking so long, but only time will tell. i really, really doubt it is the spores but another lc will be made just to double check. some wbs jars were inoculated yesterday so we can double check the rye, maybe a step was missed during grain prep.

I have learned that I don't get growth unless after soaking and a 5 min simmer if I do not roll them on something to dry them they dont grow. So what I do is dump them out onto a towel and roll them around and then add to jar. PC inoc and good to go. Don't know why it dont work unless I do that.

Most likely because the water content is to high.

I add a 1/2 cup of vern to a qt jar. This works fine for me.
