Free trade?
    #571542 - 03/06/02 12:05 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I see that George W. has introduced a 30% tariff on all steel imports to the US.
So much for free trade eh? I think I speak for most of the world in saying Fuck You America!

It's a down payment for his re-election campaign. Give the guy some credit, he might have
trouble with words of more than three syllables and he's turning the U.S. into a police state
(with the generous support of the loyal opposition), but he knows how to suck political dick
with the best of 'em.

The tarrif ranges from 8% to 30% and does not affect steel imports from Mexico or Canada... so NAFTA isn't being affected(of course there is still that whole US/Canada soft wood lumber dispute). It will be interesting to see what the EU does since they're already threatening to take it to the WTO court. Of course Bush claimed that this was a legal move under the WTO... I can't really comment since I don't know if it's legal or not. I do know that Russia is threatening a trade war(because of the steel tarrifs and the fact that their Olympians were treated "unfairly" in Salt Lake).

I also dont know wether or not this is legal under the WTO rules but to me the question is: is this a moral move? America is preaching free trade while practising protectionism.

Is it moral... I'd say it depends. Now when I heard about the tarrif, Bush seemed to be claiming that it would not be a permanent tarrif. He seemed to be claiming the US steel industry was blotted and in a bad condition and that the tarrif would allow the steel industry to organize itself before collapsing. If this is the case, so that it can become more competitive with foriegn steel... then I'm not really against the move. Well as long as American politicians don't bitch if other countries do the same thing. Of course, if it's just pure and blatent protectionism, then yes it's immoral and stupid. I mean live by the free market, die by the free market. Since I don't know the exact reason for the tarrif, I'm not really sure where I stand.
