Holy wow WBS swells like the dickens!
    #5720495 - 06/06/06 08:16 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I know that I read about WBS swelling as it absorbs water but this was unreal! I took my quart jars and filled them a little more than halfway with my soaked/cooked seeds. I fitted my jars with poly fill in the drilled out lids and PCed em for 90 minutes. I took the jars out the following morning after they cooled, and holy shizzle! That WBS had swollen almost to the tops of the jars! Luckily I didnt fill the jars anymore, otherwise I wouldnt have been able to shake them (at all) I think (hope) they will fare well. Did I fill them too much?

no, you didn't soak them enough.

proper soaking expands them all the way.

when I pc, my wbs doesn't expand at all.
soak longer next time, like 24 hours.

*Nods* Yeah, I soaked them for a few hours then simmered them for about 20-30 mins before PCing them.

Will they be okay? (I knocked them up) We shall see

The goal of soaking/simmering/boiling is to do two things. First, get the seeds holding as much water as humanly possible and second, to avoid the seeds from bursting.

I won't pimp a certain style over another because that'll invoke a circa 1985 Mac vs. PC flamewar and nobody wants that. Suffice it to say that if you saw expansion, the seeds didn't have enough moisture.

So basically what mitch said. =)

I see it slightly different.
I soak also for two reasons:

allowing the wbs to absorb maximum moisture without risk of burst grains.

to germinate the bacterial endospores so they are vulnerable to my killing of them during the pressure cooking.

without properly germinating bacterial endospores, you run a higher risk of bacterial infections in your jars.

simmering is a risk for burst grains.
granted, this will not ruin the grow at all, but again it will give bacteria another advantage.

p.s. yeah, your jars will be okay.
lets hope anyway.
I can't vouch for your sterile techniques, so I can't say for sure.

I actually like to smell that slight fermentation at the end of the soak.

it's like a sensory key that those bacterial bad guys are thinking they are doing great...

I know better...

Are burst grains not compatible with the mycelium? Will it grow on them at all? :mushroom2:

I persional use a Mac  and have my own way that i don't soak or simmer and just skimm off the floaters, clean it and load it with a certain water to WBS ratio. 100+ jars and not a single contam

burst grains will not kill anything or be bad for the mycelium.

it might even make the mycelium colonize faster.
but it could allow the bacteria to colonize faster too.

bacteria is faster and deadly.
best not to give it too many advantages.
