Depends on the kind of mushroom. Some mushrooms are just plain small. But if you want to use this patch more then once then you should wait. It may be a small shroom or a pin. A pin is a baby you can tell the difference from a pin and an adult. If its a pin then you might as well just wait. Make sure to cut and not pull out. Thats just my 2 cents someone else probably knows better.

When hunting, I find good etiquette includes cutting or pinching the mushroom off at the stem rather than uprooting it, and also, leave the pins to grow up and either pick them later or let them compete their life cycle, and the decrepit old ones leave for the bugs and to drop spores- you don't want those anyway.

It depends on the situation really. If you can go back easily you might as well wait - the shroom will be bigger and therefore have "more magic". (smaller shrooms are more potent weight for weight - but that doesn't mean you get more out of smaller shrooms over big ones) But, say its in a place thats under close scrutiny - like I had a patch that popped up next to a busy intersection, use your judgement.

True true, if you think you won't want to go back to the spot again, then you might just pick them all.... But yes, it's all up to you really

I just take pictures of the small ones and leave them there - helps remember where they were if nothing else.. no sense in taking a little mushroom. While some edible species can taste better in the young stages, actives in the wild are best left to mature more in most cases - so there would be more to eat.

Always let the pins be.. They have the right to get big and spoor out if you don't make it back for them. There will always be more mushrooms in other hunting spots during the season
