Lazy Learning
    #5720038 - 06/06/06 06:14 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I was pondering word pronunciation...
why do adults continue to use words improperly when exposed to the correct usage hundreds to thousands of times?

Why, upon correction, do they still use them? We want the laziest pathways available that require the least activity possible. (not all of us but that is the materalist way in relation to instant satisfaction).

Now the problem is that the ability to LEARN is atrophied at the expense of conveniance, laziness, and shortcuts.

For instance maintenance comes to mind. It used to be that part of owning a product would be knowing how to take care of it. Take perhaps a piece of farm equipment, maybe a tractor. In older times, tractors being commodities that require hard work.... you wouldn't be surprised to see that many tractor owners know how to rigidly repair and maintain their equipment..... this requires a lot of learning, however.
(but I hasten to add what do I know about older times? I think a lot of it comes from TV... and then just looking at old people and seeing that they are more competent at maintenance than younger people)

And automobiles are excellent examples. Most people don't seem to know how to change tires anymore. I know I don't. But what happened? Just a generation ago you had tire changers... and a generation before that even more competent. And so backwards we look and competency increases.

Now everything is done for us. If you have a flat, call triple A, they'll fix it. Need oil changed, need a car washed? Ah well you don't have to do those either.

There is something about this instant gratification way of living that seems to make the mind very resitant to learning. For instance all of the finest things in life, could be argued, take comittment...... like oh say cooking..... but let's look at cooking. Wanna bake cookies? Not from scratch you don't. You plop prepackage dough in the oven. Wanna cook veggies? They come in a bag ready to be steamed....

What happened to the mind eager to learn and work constantly? Children don't have a problem with it...... until they are broken by public schools.... babies love to play and constantly experiment... they don't demand immediate results.

So .... now... we have brains that are resistant to learning. I don't know. It's just a natural progression of things...

I'm not sure what I wanted to do with this thread. I was thinking of how people don't pronounce words right even when exposed to correct pronunciatoin and that lead me to wonder about the humans resistance to learning and growth.

we need to reclaim the flexible brain.

Here's my hit on this. The powers that be have realized their dream of dumbing down the population to such a degree that they are free to say just about anything, do just about anything and people will not be able to resist. Humans have been (for the large part) weakening for a long time now. It's hard to believe that we still survive. :frown:

Humans have always been somewhat conservative in their learning. Generally, from what I've seen, nobody is interested in learning something that they can get away with being ignorant on. They just want to do what mentally arouses them, I personally don't see it as a problem. If they are not curious about it, and can get away with not learning how to change a tire, then they will not bother to learn how. Some people have different needs/wants than others when it comes to knowledge, some want to be more independent, and work towards that end in their own fashion, trying to learn things that can make them that way. Others are genuinely curious, wanting to penetrate deeply the systems that govern the universe, but can be rather flaky when it comes to the practical. But in general, most people are just interested in interpersonal relationships. I do not see that people are more stupid now than they were in the past.. In America, wasn't illiteracy a problem not that long ago?

The one major difference I see, is that people now have an extremely broad range of information to choose from, and people who are merely enthusiasts when it comes knowledge, tend to go expansive, knowing a little about a lot, but not specializing in anything in particular, nor having a large database of practical knowledge. I definitely find myself in this category.

I imagine it's that they just do not care about using words in a proper fashion. I myself am only interested in it because I have a need to know that the other person understands me. But, beyond that, I am very lax in my attitude towards proper word usage. If my point is understood, then I am satisfied. It always seemed to me more of a pet peeve some people have, but is otherwise irrelevant.

Good post.

It is just a shifting of knowledge to other places I guess, much more broad and therefore less depth.

More literate than physical.
