So I live in northern Vt and we just had a rainy week. So I'm pretty new to shroom hunting but decided its pretty interesting so I'm giving it a go. In the woods behind my house I found about 200 or so of these mushrooms growing. I was just curious as to whether these could be active or not. The spore print was a purplish brown and there seems to be some bluing towards the bottoms of the stem. It seems like when they are small and young they are conical and a reddish brown. Then with age they become flat to convex with the middle turning tanish. Ending with a small brown ring around the ourside. Many of them have started to become wavy similar to p. cyans...Thanks for all your help! I was thinking that they might be Psilocybe Caerulipes. The spore print had a purple brownish tinit to it.

You are not going to see a pronounced annulus with Panaeolus subbalteatus… or the inactive Panaeolina for that matter. Spore color can be tricky. Did you allow enough time for heavy deposit to drop? Any distint smell or texture noticed? What kind of trees populate the woods behind your house? georgem

well they smelled kinda like dinner mushrooms and were very smooth and the cap broke pretty easily when touched. For trees I have quite a few birch. They were growing on wood chips near rotting pines and furs...

Firstly, subbs and other pans. do not favor a substrate of woold chips and such, unless the chips are covering heavily fertilized material (which yours are not of course). I'm waiting for the pics and a pic of the print even. Godspeed.

Like the others said, get a print and report back. I should mention that there are poisonous mushrooms that can look very similar to those in your pictures.

so I printed a more conical shaped brown one next to a more falt one and the flat one printed rusty brown and the conical one printed almost black. These are growing together, could one be an inactive panaeolus and the others P. Caerulipes? I also found the browner panaeolus growing on my moms heavily fertilized garden. Pure manure and mulch.. Is there anything that could confirm these as Caerulipes?
