Straw storage

Could someone store a bale of straw in there backyard and still use it even after it's been rained/snowed on? does it matter if it's dry before pasturization?

When exposed to water, straw will start to decompose. If left out there long enough, it will not be suitable for use. It's best to keep it dry for long term storage, and if you want to use it, compost it before use. That is, get it wet, mix it with dung or some sort of neutral soil to allow microbes to do an initial break down of the straw.

I've had straw in a barn for 10yrs or so. upon removal some was still green. Keep it completely dry. if it's already out there i'd use it anyway.
