Flipping Jars

I've heard a lot of good things around here about flipping BRF jars on their lids to allow more oxygen in. A lot of threads I've read have said that this will let the bottom (now the top) of the jar really take off in terms of colonization. However, adaptation 7 in the MMGG mentions that this can carry an added risk of contamination because new air is entering the jar. Four questions:
1. Is this a serious concern? Has anyone ever had an otherwise healthy jar get contaminated after they flipped it?
2. If no, then when is the best time to flip it? I have two jars that are around 60% colonized. One of them is showing the beginnings of growth on the bottom but I'd like to speed things up a little if possible.
3. Doesn't turning the jar over cover the inoculation holes and prevent air exchange? Or can air still get in?
4. After being flipped, should the jars be flipped back at some point, or left upside down until their birthday?

1. Very little concern.
2. It doesn't really matter towards the end of the process is when it is most beneficial however.
3. Nope verm allows gas transfer easily.
4. Don't matter.

once flipped dont flip back as your dry verm barrier may fall down the sides because your cake may have gotten smaller

yea, leave em flipped untill their BDay. I've never had a prob with contams from flipping. Just put something under the jar so it can breathe if it's on a flat surface like a toothpick to keep the edge up. Flipping works great.
I don't know what size jars you use, I like 1 pint which can take a little longer. But I came up with a little trick. Picked up some 3/32" brass tubing from a hobby shop, and made an extention for the syringe to reach the bottom of the jar. Now I only do 3 holes around the jarlid and one in the middle. Works GREAT! Now it grows in both directions, but I still flip at 60%. 1 pint jars fully colonize in 12 days with LC of course.

Yeah, like BP Johny said, don't flip them back over once you flip them. I have lost jars from doing that. And what sucks about it is you usualy won't know its contamed until you go to birth it and the "dry verm" is now a fucking mold playground. Trust me on this one.

Jars should only be flipped if necessary (they stall) otherwise leave them be. You can also crack the lids slightly to allow better gas exchange and never have to flip at all. GL

I'm sure you're right Hyphae, but once they stall it takes a day or two or three, just to see that they've stopped. And most of mine do stall, probably mainly cause of 1 pint jars, but I'd flip at 60% and skip that.
Plus, while they're stalled, aren't they burning nutes just to stay alive? Some of mine were stalled for about 2 weeks, and now they won't pin after a dunk and 2 weeks in FC??

No their metabolism slows as does there appetite. I know why not give cracking the lids loose slightly a chance? It's worked for me for years on quarts as well as 1/2 gallon spawn jars. If you guys are having problems with jars stalling I would look into the cause rather than addressing the symptom.

I went ahead and flipped my two jars. I removed the tape "tents" that I had over the inoculation holes and gave the lids a wipe with alcohol. Is it fine that the holes are uncovered now that the jar is upside down?

Holes should have been uncovered and left uncovered at inoculation time. Leaving them taped is the number one reason jars stall when doing the PFTek! FYI. This is something that IMHO should be not only changed but stressed in the PFTek!

I use that helpful tip everytime I do pf now and I must admit it works well too, but I do alittle verying of it. I innoc put tape on then ounce I see growth I take the tape off and never worry about it agn. I think it might have been you tips hyphae that gave me that one

Some do put the tape back on but it is redundant and simply unnecessary, it certainly doesn't hurt as jars are not producing any gases at this time but still unnecessary and one more thing to not forget. I personally never used tape in the first place with the PFTek.
