LC: Such a Thing as Too Much Magnetic Stirring?
    #5718380 - 06/06/06 09:55 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I have three LC jars, mostly redundant and meant as backups in case my jars didn't pop. But they did, so the LCs are now kind of experimental.

I put a 1 qt LC on the magnetic stirrer last night with enough rotation to make a very small dimple. I also placed the jar a little offset so the DIY rod made contact with the side of the glass to achieve a kind of mincing/chopping effect. This morning I woke up and the myc was beaten up to the point of the liquid was just cloudy. Very little mycelium mass at all.

So I'm wondering if I can hurt the myc by pulverizing it like this. My guess is that the myc will bounce back like gangbusters but I was wondering what the experienced community might think.

i say the smaller the better... like little snowflakes. Each one will start a culture, once they gro into each other it becomes rhizomorphic. Ropey

I have a magnetic stearer with a pece of wire in it (all home made).

It's day six after inoculating and it looks like this

Your guess is right

i like to chop them to bits in this manner, then let recover with no or minimal agitation, and boy does it ever... (no agitation sometimes because i rotate them on and off the plates, who'da thought that 2 mag stirrers still isn't enough?)

of course it wont grow too well if there's too much agitation all the time, but you aren't hurting it either... just breaking into small pieces that will each grow into more and more thicker globs... rinse repeat and enjoy

I put mine on high about every 2 days(total vortex) just to break it up reaaly good. I only do this for about 45 min to 1 hour. You should be okay. GL, and still glad to hear that the others are going strong, that was a scary time waiting for them to pop.
