locking your keys in your car (never again)

im passing my $50 lesson to save yourself a $50 lesson. =)
so this happened awhile back, i was with my ladyfriend, we went to dave & busters, i stepped out of my car & shut the door. right then & there i knew i locked my keys in the car. to add insult to injury, the keys were in the ignition & the car was running. oh, & my cigs were staring at me from the center console.
realizing a locksmith wouldnt arrive for at least an hour i knew i had to get the car turned off somehow or possibly risk having the car run out of gas.
so i brainstormed a minute & remembered a trick i learned when i was a kid: the hoodlatch on most all vehicles are engaged by a cable. (the cable running from the hood lever inside your vehicle, to the hoodlatch lever in your engine compartment)
the cable is affixed to the latch much like that of a bicycle brake.
the next time you open your hood, examine the latch fixture. find the cable & the lever the cable attaches to. give that lever a sqeeze until the hood latch opens up. now try to do it from undernieth the vehicle. (be careful you dont cut your hands/fingers off by the radiator fan)
so now that i had the hood open, i had to figure out how to turn the car off. taking the battery cables off would be useless, as once your car is up & running, the alternator takes over & powers the vehicle.
sooo my only option was to pull the sparkplug wires from the sparkplugs. i pulled each one at a time as fast as i could & dropped the wire cuz if you hold it, the spark will jump & electrocute you. so 1 at a time, fast as you can until the car dies. (make sure you know exactly where each wire goes back or you'll fuck up the firing order & your car wont run)
so after that, we went into D&B's, called a locksmith & had a nice cold newcastle & dinner while we waited.
locksmith came, he broke into my car in less than a minute, i gave him $50 & he was on his merry way.. ..without even asking to see my i.d or registration to prove the car was mine. quickest $50 ive ever spent. but at least i could now enjoy my cig while the bartender was hitting on my ladyfriend inside while she was trying to finish her angelhair pasta.
when i came back, i sat down, & she immediately put him on blast while he was standing there: "[bartenders name] gave me his number, while you were outside, he wants to join us later tonight after he gets off work"
his jaw dropped & his eyes opened up real wide realizing he just got sold the fuck out like the douchebag he is.
i pay the bill, leave him jack shit for tip & we both get up & play video games.
but annyway.
i made a spare copy of my car key & its now very well hidden in the engine compartment.
this wont happen again.

first time it happend to me, i was in my gf's nova... got out ot fhe car, oh shit, keys are still in the ignition. good thing it was an old 79, and we just pry'd the window open a little... for some reason she left her window down like, a quarter inch
so that day i bought a hide a key and she's had to use it about every week... but for some reason, she left it in the car, and well... it dont do you no good in the car... i always had to keep a spare, cand drive her the damn keys...
then last week, in a honda that i've been driving, i walked up to my car out of class, and oh shit, where are my keys... they were in the ignition... turned off, so i atleast got the battery to start it when i do get in... i checked for a hide a key from the previous owner, but nuthin... so i was about to call a locksmith, and i was like "han, this is a honda, easiest car int he world to break into... " so i have this tail light that's all ripped out, so i pulled it off, and punched through the packing tape on the interior, and felt my toolbox (it's a hatchback, so i could also see my tools.. .for some reason, my box wasnt latch, and good thing too... cause i never would have been ablet to turn it to get to the other latch... so i saw a cotter pin from when i replaced my CV joints... instanly i grabbed it and knew it was my key to unlocking this mystery... i grabbed it like ash grabbes the hammer in army of darkness... it totaly zoomed in on it and evrything...
so i walked up to the keyhole, try to stick it in, it's too big, so i bent it upward to get it just 1 part of the pin... stuck it in the keyhold ever so slighty, turned it really gently... didnt seem like it was unlocked, but i checked the door and bam, opened right up... i swear any flat object would have been able to do this... i didnt have anything that would fith that criteria in my pocket though...
i'd done that a few times on some older cars... if it's not turned all the way back, it wont catch and it wont actualy be locked... just latched... my guess is after awhile, a srping wears out or something...

So your telling us that a car will run without the battery cables hooked up? ...Your vehicle will not power without both cables hooked up.

Engine runs just fine with the battery cable removed from the battery. That is, as long as your altenator is working properly.

yea, that's how they test to see if your alternator is working... they disconnect the ternimal from the battery, and if it dies, usualy instantly, you need a new alternator... i just went through this with the honda.. .

Ever since my pizza delivery days, I keep a spare car key on me. I used to have it tied to a shoestring with the other end looped on my belt loop. I also have a automotive lock out set in my trunk for friends and co-workers that don't plan ahead. Lockpicks will also work on quite a few cars without the GM style sidebar locks.
