When to fruit oysters?
    #5716229 - 06/05/06 07:10 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I have a couple bags of oyster mushrooms that appear to have fully colonized, if lightly. Should I wait a couple days for the mycelium to thicken up, or should the bags be punctured and put in the fruiting chamber now?

Thanks

Leimana

Hey Leimana,

What are you growing the oysters on?

25% shredded cardboard, 25% shredded newspaper, 50% crushed corncob and just a little bit of horse poo to add a touch of nitrogen. Pasteurized and spawned with a quart of WBS spawn.

The spawn colonized the substrate in about 4 days, but it is not dense white yet.

Thanks,

Leimana

That's pretty fast even for oysters. I've never grown oysters on anything pasturized that used horse poo as supplement. I'm curious to hear how well it does, but I'm not sure what you should do.

why not break it up in the bag and see how well its colinized on the inside? thought i heard somewhere that breakin up makes it regrow stronger or something. even just do a corner or whatnot.

wait untile the bags are fully colonized, and mycelium seem vigorous, remember that oyster mycelium need a lot of air exchange so value yourself when is the moment.

cut with a blade different "X" over the bag and post pics!!!

yea, if it's only been 4 day i'd wait for a few more. my blues culture quick too, but slow down inside the medium. breaking it up would definatly help, but slow donw the process temporerily.

i recently made a similar mix, and decided to try doing the 50/50+ casing tek, and had phenominal results. if you got a little extra culture i highly recomend trying it with your oysters!

good luck man!!!

Agreed!! give it a few more days...humidity should be high too...lots and lots of air exchange and amber light. if the fruit comes out finished looking like sea coral than you lighting wasn't enough

agreed. I find that in the summer here it's hard to keep the temps down for most edibles, so i just do the Cubes, but switch to the blues, and shiitakes, and miatakes in the winter. its a "cool' change during the months. lol
