you can use lava rocks in a pmp(poor mans pod) if you clean them very good, alot of rinsing with them to get that red out. use perlite in a standard fc.

They work the same way. Each has small craters. Water will setting into these craters and it will evaperate at a much faster rate. In general perlite has more and smaller craters so it will keep a higher humidity.

So the answer to your question is dependent on how high you want the humidity in the chamber.

Yes perlite has much better surface area, if using lava use a hammer and crush it up a bit and it will work much better. I'd only recommend lava for PMP's

I would only use lava rocks simply because they are reusable, perilite is way too much of a mess to work with. I realy dont know how people can handle the stuff, im a gardener and i cant handle it. If you wanna clean your lava rocks quick, pressure cook em for 10 minutes more or less..

Perlite is actually very easy to disinfect if you use the correct method, I'm a gardener too! bleach soak in 5gal. Buckets with a drain and rinse in a pillow case then back into the FC it goes! I always work with perlite damp
