Hey everyone! I'm new here and I just found some shrooms growing on a patch of grass in my apartment complex. I was Just wondering if they look like any active species of mushroom, or if they are deadly poisonous. i just picked them about 30 mins ago.

please read the rules for posting in this forum, give a description and you might get a better answer. i will say that these could be of any number of genera, look as though they might be a Panaeolina, a Psathyrella, etc.
please give the required info and take a spore print.
they are probably not active.
do not skimp on the descriptions.

sorry, I live in south east pa. the caps are tan snd chocolatey in color, the gills are brown to light brown. stems are tan, and no bruising as of yet. and they smell like mushrooms that you would buy in the store. they were growing from a patch of dirt surrounded by grasss under a black maple i believe.

they sound to me to be a strong contender or the genus Psathyrella then.

No, I disagree. I have found that this is not a reliable indicator in differentiating between the genus psathyrella and Panaeolus. I have found hundreds of Pans with splitting stems, and am certain that they were not psathyrella. Mind you, that was the one characteristic of the mushrooms i found that had me torn between the two. I have read this again and again, but my experience and other members experiences recently with the Pan genus has persuaded me against this aspect of the stipe.

i'm not basing my guess solely uppon the texture of the stipe, but also the fact that it was hollow, the gills are brown, becomming deeper brown with sporulation, the habitat and the general aspect of the specimens pictured.
a spore print has yet to be obtained, which may help to clear this up, but i still believe that they are likely Psathyrella.
