BRF jar inoculation question
    #5715311 - 06/05/06 02:40 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I just got some presterilized brf jars and they dont have any holes on the top :X I was just thinking about sterilizing an ice pick and poke one small hole in the middle of the top of the jar(without touching the brf mixture), inoc, then put some medical tape over.

would that work or should i just do 4 holes? reason im doing one is im not sure how safe it would be making multiple holes in an already sterilized jar.

sorry if any of this seems dumb im just not sure what to do   :stoned: .thanks in advance.

innoculating at one point will give you a slower colonization raters. By injecting spore solution at 4 points you are introducint innoculant to more areas, with mycellium growing at 4 points instead of one you will reach 100% faster.

Safest way would be to contact medium mania and ask for a replacement. Your jars should come pre drilled.

Other then that you could flame sterilize a 10 penny nail or PC it, if you have a glove box id suggest puncturing the lid within it. If not, sterlize your lab space, and puncture the lids carefully. Try not to drive the nail through the dry verm layer.

I, too, just got 24 jars from Medium Mania and they didn't come pre-drilled. I just went and checked on the site and it said "pre-drilled holes available upon request", but I could swear it didn't say that when I ordered. I dunno.

So what are the chances these will get all fucked up by doing this nail and hammer thing? Of course, they be sterilized, but I've got 24 to do. I'm pretty nervous about this messing up.

I dunno man but they are ASSHOLES for not drilling them

why the fuck wouldnt they drill them

i'd hold off on the nail and hammer thing and wait for another idea but its either that or use a sterilized drill bit

Flame a small nail that is just a little bigger than the needle you are using, put at min 4 holes at four points along the edge of the jar lid(i use 5 myself 4 for innoc and the fifth in the middle to help the air part) and you should be good to go, spray alot of lysol in the air before you make the holes and you should be okay.

Thnx/\/\/\/\sounds good

Look, I just wanted to add that the guys over at Medium Mania were very cool with all the questions I had and were really prompt with returning emails.  I must have just missed the statement about having to request the holes.  I'd definitely order from them again, I'll just have to actually read before I buy.  :cool2:

lab area is sprayed with all sorts of good stuff. gona let that settle for a few short min. gona flame small nail and inoc and put some medical tape over the holes.

thanks for the help everyone.
