innoculating birdseed with polyfill lid
    #570716 - 03/05/02 05:10 PM (22 years, 29 days ago)

I've seen a few different teks that use birdseed with polyfill lids, but I haven't seen anything that even refers to a method of innoculation. The lids obviously don't have the 4 holds normally used for innoculation in pf style jars, and I'm assuming (since they don't mention it) the teks are not meant to be used with a dry verm layer, so how would I safely innoculate jars such as these:

Thanks... That's what I was leaning towards doing, but I wanted to hear it straight from an experienced grower.

What? thats silly. that sounds like hes gonna poke the filter out, or introduce contams.
what you want, is a second hole if you're using a spore syringe, and have polyfill in one hole, and use hte other one just for inucouation, and cover it with tape.

Ive inoculated thru the polyfil hole everytime and had no problems at all, it wont fall in if yousqueeze it in thru the sides carefully..u dont poke thru it right at the center of the polyfil plug....geeze, yes things are realy that simple

A tiny hole covered with Silastic sealant, makes a nice self-sealing injection port.

Nice one Swami, self sealing holes sound ace.

Silastic is a silicone based sealant commonly used in bathrooms and around windows. You can usually buy it in the hardware section of the supermarket or at any hardware store. There are different colors too if you care, black, white, clear etc.

Hey Northernsoul,

If you want cheap polyfill go to a fabric store. $2 will buy you enough to last a lifetime!

Cheers

you'd be well advised to think before you post.
nothing silly about injecting thru the polyfil plug.
i've done it plenty.
so have many others.
if you put a big wad in there, and pull it thru tight,
it's not going to pop out when a needle slides thru.
no need for extra holes, tape, etc.
as for the silicon, it's not a bad idea. i used to silicon around the hole's edge before i pulled my polyfil thru, to seal the rim. but it's really not needed, so i don't bother any more.

Polyfill? Does it work well? Is it like the filters those micron magic guys are selling?
I live in Europe and it is boud to be called something else here than "Polyfill".
Can you give me any more info on what this stuff really is so that I can trace
it up here? I know it`s a polyester based product but what does it look like?
Anyway I suppose any fine meshed fabric will do nicely if you use a few layers
of it and some vermiculite beneath that again.

It is the fluffy stuff they put inside of cheap comforters and pillows. You can buy it at pet stores as filter material meant to go in a fish tank filter. Fabric stores also carry it for a much cheaper price in most cases. Pet stores are, by far, the easiest place to track it down, though. I think everyone knows where their nearest pet store is.

Here's a "polyfill for dummies" tek...
