The trials and tribulations of being a pothead

From the ages of 16-19 I smoked marijuana. I loved it and it was my main hobby. I spent thousands of dollars on pot. I haven't smoked the stuff in years because it just isn't fun for me anymore. Sometimes I reminisce about my marijuana days. I wish I still liked getting stoned. If I did I would do it all of the time. But, I also think of all of the shitty things that I experienced in the weed scene.
Here's how weed was graded in my area:
Schwag: $15-$20 an 1/8 ($25 if I was getting ripped off). Schwag is disgusting. It is brown, full of seeds, full of unidentifiable stuff (like twigs, acorns, and what looks like lawn clippings), tastes terrible, and gives you more of a headache than a high. Often it has been compressed which just adds to the shittiness of it.
Commercial: $25-$30 an 1/8 ($35 if I was getting ripped off). Commercial is better than schwag. It has slightly fewer seeds, is slightly greener, has an OK taste, and the high is so-so.
Good Commercial: $30-$35 an 1/8 ($40 if I was getting ripped off). Good commercial is better than commercial. It has fewer seeds, you might actually start to see some green freshness and crystals, and the taste isn't bad.
Midgrade: $35-$45 an 1/8 ($50 if I was getting ripped off). Midgrade is pretty good. It has very few seeds, has a good smell to it, tastes good, and gets you decently high.
Funk: $50 an 1/8 (I would never spend more than $50 for an 1/8 of weed). Funk weed smells great and strong (often piney, skunky, etc..). It gets you high after two hits, the high is great, it tastes awesome, it looks awesome, there are no seeds, and it is often sticky.
My town never once had enough marijuana in it to satisfy demand. Because of that it was very common for people to rip other people off. One of the most common shady things was when people would advertise grades of weed as being one step above what they really were (Schwag as Commercial or Good Commericial as Midgrade). Another common shady weed tactic was when people would pinch out of bags (even friends would do this to other friends). In my town, the bags never weighed and the weed you got was almost always a rip-off.
Another thing that was common in my town; people talking up how they could get good weed and it never happened. I have so many pathetic stories of going on wild goose chases to find weed and ending up at the strange house of somebody knew somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody that I knew. After hours of tagging along with the person who could "get the good shit" it was all too common to walk away with an underweight bag that was garbage schwag.
Most of my pothead buddies who didn't stop smoking weed and who stayed in my hometown are now all either drug addicts (because they moved onto heroin, meth, etc..) or they are lethargic losers. I have seen people with overdue bills sitting on their table and they had a choice between paying these bills or buying pot. They seem to invariably decide to buy the pot.
Smoking weed also made me feel stupid. If I had smoked a lot, the next day I would feel retarded. I actually enjoy being sober most of the time now. Granted, I still drink every once in a while and I do nitrous (thankfully I am cutting back on that). But, I like how my body feels when I eat right, stay active, and am chemical free.
No offense to the pot smokers here (which I'm sure is 90% of you) but I just don't understand the pothead lifestyle anymore.

You had it easy man... this "schwag" stuff sounds like a godsend compared to the cannabis resin (known as soap bar) me and my buds grew up smoking during our pothead years. This disgusting brown lump is the norm in most places in the UK, and im not talking about lumps of hash like in Amsterdam, im talking lumps of nasty plastic filled dirty unknown cack which as far as im aware only exists in the UK. I've never heard of anyone from the US talking about this stuff anyway. It doesn't even smell like weed or get you high, it's like smoking tarmac and mainly makes you lazy and gives you a headache. You hear all sorts of rumours about what i mixed in with this stuff, everything from diesel to pig tranquilizers... and of course, plastic, lots of plastic. Its not unknown for people to find coins in the middle of their deals added to give them weight. We once found a dead fly in one of our lumps. We were extremely lucky if we could get anything that even resembled leaves, never mind actual sticky green!
I read somewhere that soap bar on average contains no more than 4% THC or something... not that it matters because most people who deal in this filthy stuff dont even know what THC is!

Awwww.....our little Randal has grown up....how cute.
I hear ya man. I used to smoke everyday for a few years straight until one day I woke up and like you said just felt fucking retarded. My brain was completely fogged up. I had stopped reading daily, stopped pushing myself to achieve more, stopped caring about most things other than when I was going to get high later in the day. So I quit for awhile and did a lot of shrooms. My brain wasn't foggy anymore but I couldn't relate to the general public anymore either. No one could understand what I was talking about.
So I took a break from them and was completely sober for a good 3-4 months. I felt good and decided to start both back up. I realize that I'm not a pothead anymore, even though I like the occasional high around friends and tripping....I haven't tripped in months but will be doing so very shortly. I have a feeling I won't be doing much of either.
Huge doses rarely.

ouch... I can walk to a shop that is open from 8AM - 4AM, check the weedmenu and buy some very good weed for 6euro/gram. Never seen a fly, coin or seed in my weed.
And in about 6weeks I can smoke OUR first homegrown:

I'm the same way about alcohol. I drank so much the 3.5 years I was in the army, I don't want to drink now. Just the smell of hard liquor makes me ill.
Weed on the other hand
It is a daily habit for me. I'm not the "lazy stoner" stereo type. Pay my bills, always have a job. Weed is only an added bonus.
I have had the same dealer for 9-10 years now. Never had a problem with him. He is a godsend

It's weird. I can still be a productive pothead. But recently, I haven't been enjoying it, at all. This is some top-notch stuff I have, but the high isn't fun or enjoyable and the comedown is awful. It's been happening with all different types for about the last month. It's hard, though, when, like you said, it is a hobby. I also enjoy the act of smoking; it's relaxing. I think I'm going to stop soon, at least temporarily. It's going to be hard; part of me wants to, and the other part doesn't...but I don't know why.

Showoff, and make that our homegrown, it's growing in 'my' house FFS And btw, you can also get very good weed for 5 euro a gram.

Sure you can rent the attic (where the weed is also grown) for 250 euros a month. It does need some fixing up edit: attic:

It has a lock so that should be allright. You could always disconnect the outgoing airflow and get stoned by the smell completely filling the room.

I started smoking weed at about 13-14, and even though I do still ocassionally smoke, It's not the same. Its not realy fun anymore, and all I seem to do is get lazy, sit around, and eat a bunch of unhealthy food.
Ocassionally however, smoking gives me some insight, or helps me see the world in a new way.
I'm starting to think that this latter effect isn't worth being lethargic and spaced out.
