Team names

What's with some NBA team names? It seems some them make no sense at all.
The Clippers
The Pacers
The Lakers
What's a Clipper? What's a Pacer, and what's a Laker?
I've always wondered who exactly came up with these names when share holders were voting on a name for the franchise.

Clippers are the really fast boats that used to dock in LA all the time.
Lakers is from when the team was orignally in Minnesota, and it makes alot more sense for a Minnesota team. They have like, one lake in California. WTF?
Theres alot that are stupid. Utah Jazz, when I think its illegal to play jazz in Utah, but it was orignally the New Orleans team. St. Louis Rams? There are no rams in St. Louis....

No guesses for the other two.

Ah, bingo. I thought the Pacers name had something to do with racing.
It's always funny when they let the fans pick a name for a franchise. You get teams like the "Raptors" and the "Bobcats"

That be it.
Like the pace car sets the pace of the race (out in front) the Pacers would set the pace of the league, or in first place with everybody else behind them.

LA Lakers are the old Minneapolis Lakers, like "Minnesota: the land of 10,000 lakes".
