Alder Tea Spray

As some of you may know, Alder chips not only can be used as a nutritive substrate, but also contain chemicals that fight many bacteria (at least those we don't want).
What if one were to make a tea, say, out of Alder chips, and then use that to spray casings for example. Is this possibly a way to hydrate a casing and help keep its sterility at the same time? Any comments, suggestions, thoughts, related or not, welcome!

I dont know, but I'm keeping an eye on this thread. Alder grows all over the place where I'm at.

Maybe the alder spray would provide nutrients to the myc. as it colonized the casing layer, while at the same time maintaining its cleanliness and its humidity..

you dont want nutrients in the casing layer. you will get overlay and poorer pinning more easily. look up debates on peat vs coir as casing materials. coir is inferior because it it more nutrient rich than peat. you can add a little coir to promote growth but you shouldnt go over like 10-15%. you dont get much contam with coir, but the myc grows too well in it. it gets overlayed more often and is more apt to stay colonizing when you want it to pin. a little helps it through but a lot is detrimental.
ok, so you should not put that into your casing layer.
personally i would go peat/ver with a little coir. no alder. the coir adds your nutes and also helps the texture off-textured peat. some peat is already great but some is off and the coir helps. also if you add the nutes to the casing layer as a tea they will get into the peat and verm rather than being restricted to the coir. not a good idea.
now this is not to say that your idea is dead. hydration with teas is a great idea where you want nutrients. you can add it to a substrate mix for sure. put that and whatever else into a tea and hydrate poo and/or verm or whatever else. whatever. you can do that and whatever else. i think it is a good idea to diversify your nutrient sources as long as you keep from having too much nutrients or too much of a particular one.
