Aphids! Nooooooooooooo!

My young poppies are under assault by aphids, I don't know what to do!
For now, I sprayed them with dilute soapy water, but I don't think that's going to solve anything. It will just delay them at best.
I don't have any pesticides, what can I do? They're in a bad way, they'll die if I don't step in and save them.
Also, while I'm asking questions, can poppies tolerate hot climates? It's summer here in SoCal, will the intense heat kill them even if they're properly watered?

Nah, they do fine in Afganistan. I don't think aphids will be a problem for such a short lived crop, but you can fill 1-2" of perlite around the top of the container (on top of soil), keeps 'em out good.

Yes,they are suppose to.
I have been battleing aphids on my morning glorys for 2 weeks now.I use tobbaco and water in a spray bottle. It seems to work well if I use it everyday for a week straight.
I need some lady bugs to come to my rescue.

I don't clain to know anything but buds but i can say this. this stuff got rid of a case of spider mites in two treatments and I have no idea how. there is nothing even close to poison in it. Totally organic

meh, if I DO wind up using chemicals, I'll pick up some nice poisons and go scorched-earth on the little bastards.
I'll consider ordering some of that for future use, but my poppies are too far-gone to wait for an order to arrive. If I spray, I'm going to the store and spraying right away.
I have some pipe tobacco, could I just steep it in hot water and use the water to spray?

lady bugs will destroy an aphid colony and if i remember right the were 29.95 for a 1000. and they will stay near a good water an food source. they wont rid them but will make a good balance bettween predator and prey. i have tried them on mites also but they dont like eating mites for some reason. if they are worring you and you dont want pestacidies use water or a hose to rinse them off every other day. but outdoors im surprised predators havnt found them yet. neem oil may work for aphids but i dont know because it kills eggs not adults and thats mites. maybe plant crysanthiums nearby or a tobbaco, cinnamon, garlic blend would knock them out. bug b gone kills anything but i wouldnt recommend it but its good for clones(because you can grow them after infestation to moms and clone from therere moving the toxins) that have infestations cause its like dropping a nuclear bomb on them and may poison you also(not right away but after years of use). the bottle even recommends poison control after prolonged skin exposure(cant be good).

This works for me fine: Make some tobacco tea by boiling a few cigarettes in about a quart of water. Add a little soap (NOT detergent) buy a bar of castile soap and use a small piece of that. Dissolve the soap into the tea and spray your poppies. (try a little red pepper in your spray for a major infestation) Healthy plants rarely get aphids, so fertilize, etc.

I use safer's soap but whatever you use, you have to hit them every day for at least 2 weeks straight. After that, maybe check them every few days to see if they've come back. It's easy to kill them but they multiply like mad. Always check the undersides of leaves. Poppies die in the south usa summer so heat will kill them.

I lack a number of those ingredients, but I did give them a strong shot of water that had tobacco steeped in it.
I used about 5 teaspoons of loose pipe tobacco and steeped it in about 4-5 cups of hot water for a short while. The resulting liquid was a dark translucent brown.
I loaded it into a squirt bottle and tried to cover every surface of the tiny plants.
Two of the poppies look like they're quite capable of surviving, the third is somewhat older but also in significantly worse shape. Odds seem to be 50/50 right now whether it will live or die.

May I ask what you are planning to do with only three poppies? That might only give you one teacup of goodness.

make that two poppies, the big one died.
I've planted, overall, at least 50 poppies, the problem is that they keep getting killed.
Insects bite them, braindead gardeners pull them up, rains knock them over....
I've come to the conclusion that God has declared war on my garden.

why not just let them live? Your plants should flower soon and all the goodness will soon fade away..... The only way i have known to grow poppies is by planting over 1000 seeds at a time. Then you have more of a chance getting a handful of pods.

It will be a month or two before the little poppies I'm talking about will flower. They're only a few inches tall.
I just tossed a thousand or so seeds down in a flowerbed last week, they should have a chance to grow nicely over the summer as long as the heat doesn't cook them. I was shocked to find how many seeds were produced by just a few poppies, I harvested enough to replant all of the ones I lost. I'm getting annoyed that the soil there doesn't hold water well.
I tossed some broken up peat moss over the topsoil and watered it thoroughly, but what I'd really like to do is put down a soaker hose or two to use for watering, that way I wouldn't risk toppling little seedlings when I watered.

take my advice: put orange peels around your plant, it works wonders, the aphids will be magically gone the next day or so. it worked for my psychotrias at least.
