RTV fumes question
    #5713097 - 06/04/06 10:23 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I used RTV sealant to create a good seal on my FC's lid. Will the fumes from the sealant effect the cakes at all? Anyone with experience in this would be really helpful. Thanks.

Why would you want a good seal on a FC lid? You want air exchange and lots of it. How are you going to get the lid off to attend them? I don't even put the lids on tight, but just set them in place crooked so air gets in and out all around the edges.

and dont forget to mention the silicon RTV takes about a month to fully flash off the VOCs, that will affect the shrooms and cause mutants

VOC fumes certainly won't help any. Then again maybe you'll discover something new.

I only had one slightly mutated cap from my firstflush. I put the pint sized WBS cake into the FC exactly 24hr after I applied the RTV (clear type) silicone to my airtube inlets and my lightport in the lid.

On the other hand, the small pump and fruiting chamber I have get 24 complete air exchanges every hour.

I created a thin gasket by spreading the RTV silicone around the underside of the lid and letting it dry. Then I set the lid on the container, this created more of an air tight seal than just hard plastic on plastic. Keeping my high humidity in, and then still being able to take off the lid to do FAE. Although I am crossing my fingers on no mutants. If I get them, then I'll let you guys know.
