Books or No Books?
    #5711959 - 06/04/06 05:13 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

So I decided I should pick up some books on growing, looked through Amazon for all the Usual Suspects but then a question occurred to me...

Will I really learn anything in those books that I can't easily learn here? Maybe these forums are even better than the books because it's community-edited and always up-to-date.

Thoughts, comments, etc?

Read the grow logs, cultivation forums, and cultivation archives. There are a few new books on the market, and the older books are purely outdated. There is no real replacement for the current methods you'll learn browsing here.

I'm thinking of buying the latest guide, mostly because I have a 50$ gift certificate to Barnes & Noble with nothing else to spend it on; it has nice pictures, so it'll make a good coffee table book if nothing else.

Thanks for the good advice, all. I had the sneaking suspicion that I might do well to save my hard-earned cash. =)

AFOF did his first successful fungi research solely with information gleaned from grow logs and various teks found in these forums. He of course was delighted by the results, and with his newfound enthusiasm for the subject (as a successful project will invariably cause), he went out and bought the pricey Paul Stamets books. And what does AFOF constantly refer to when pursuing additional research?

Yup, you guessed it, this site. The books are nice for your library, but when you need some results without getting all tangled up in expensive gadgets and dedicated facilities, it's the Shroomery for sure!

Well although this website is excellent and you can find all the information
ever needed here, i have to say TMC is a great book and i recommend it
to everyone who doesn't have it. not for the methods but because it
explains how the mushroom works etc etc etc

Agreed, spicytuna. They are great books, I don't mean to imply they are not. I've read both cover to cover. But if splifner is tight on cash, I'd have to say save your money for now and invest that cash in some jars, a PMP, and the other sundry items to get a setup going that will yield some fruit. (Pun very much intended!)

If u only plan on growing actives and not reall doing any experimentation, then the money is much better spent on cultivation items such as pc or a mountain of tubs :o)

If u want to go further in this hobby (most usually do, its just so adictive) then i'd recomend getting your hands on as many mychology books as u can afford.

I have a love of books, I read them as much as I do here, especially when off line,

I recommend books for sure,

And not everything is online, like it is laid out in the books.

I would get the books, just in-case this web site goes down sometime. Books can't(I hope) end up like Overgorw.

If you've got the extra cash I think it's worth it to get the books. Nice quick reference to things. For the latest innovations though you have to turn to the OMC.
