Went Hunting in East TN...

Well, today I went up into the woods, and into a cattle field, and saw numerous cow pies, and numerous areas of higher grass near the piles themselves, and did not find any mushroom, active or not. I looked around for like 15-20 minutes, in the moderatly sized field. On the walk back through the woods, I noticed one small mushroom growing on a piece of wood, that had broken off of a tree in the forest. I picked it off...and it looks like it might be active, and edible. It just rained. The forest, was damp, and everything was wet. I kind of have liek a sense that it might be active, but no idea what identity it is, or for sure if it's safe to eat.

(I did not squeeze the stem, to check for any spore print (blue))

It's probably a Pluteus.. one of the most common mushrooms found on stumps and wood.
Hard to see the gill attachment to be sure, but I see them so much that I'm used to them.
The gills should take on a pinkish/salmon colored hue as it ages.
Most Pluteus species are not active and not that great of an edible.
There are some rarely found species that will bruise bright blue on the stem, especially near the base. That would be the sign of an active one. Chances of finding those are slim to none, yet the inactive ones are ever so common.

What I do not understand is this. Why were there no mushrooms, NONE, not even plain old inactive mushrooms near the million piles of cow poop? And even in the small areas of tall ggrass next to some of the poop, there were no mushrooms there? I was told this is the right season, and right time, and it has been humid/raining the past couple of days...any ideas?

Could just be the conditions.
A lot of times in the summer, when it's really hot, in some areas an open cow pasture is an oven. It's always like that in my area during summer. It varies depending on your location, elevation, and other factors.
Even if I go to cow pastures this time of year after a heavy rain, I doubt I would find anything because it's been like 90+ degrees. I rarely ever do find stuff in cow fields in the summer.
Some places are different - they can hold moisture longer, or are shaded so mushrooms are able to grow there even in the heat of summer.
Spring and fall just seem to be better times to check that kind of habitat.

Look at the cow pies in the shade and in the woods... Most cow pies out in the sun wont hold mushrooms its just too hot and most mushrooms don't like the direct sun

Well, I just went looking around in my backyard, here in East TN, and I found a few of these...not sure what the heck they are...but I could use some advice. There were some baby ones, as well.

Can anyone help me learn if this type is active, and what I.D it is/ if it's edible.

Do a spore print, brown = foenisecii (inactive), black spore print = subbalteatus (mildly active).

Panaeolina foenisecii is not an active mushroom, despite what you read. To make a spore print, cut off the cap and put it on a white piece of paper gills down and put a cup over it...then wait 24 hours and take the cap off...I'm positive the shrooms you found are Panaeolina foenisecii, if you want to find Panaeolus subbalteatus, a moderately active mushroom that looks similar to Panaeolina foenisecii, look in horse manure mixed with stable shavings/hay...
Remember... Panaeolina foenisecii = Brown spores Panaeolus subbalteatus = Jet black spores

(the cap fell aprt, while I was handling it...it is distictly light yellow...but I do not know if it, from the sun or it's natural color.)

Any help, thanks.
(The colours may not be accurate, due to how old they are, and they look like they are...so will I.D ing be difficult?)
