My buddy is taking care of our jars right now and he says that they look about 100% colonized. He doesn't trust himself to birth them and I can't get back to his place until next weekend. Will there be any adverse effects if the cakes aren't birthed until Friday or Saturday if they look 100% colonized now(Sunday)?

you should be just fine.
If you are real worried, stick them in the fridge. That will stunt the growth while they are cold.

Most PF cultivators prefer to wait until a few days after the visible areas are colonized to birth. This ensures that the interior of the cake is fully colonized as well.

A jar got overlooked and spent about 3 weeks more than it should of in the jar. Birthed it and pulled a good flush. You should be good

Is it true that the mycelium will keep burning the nutrients in the substarte though when left?? Or does it just settle down once its reached full colonization..?

from my understanding, which might be wrong... mushroom mycelium, while young and still colonizing, eats and burns 'calories' faster than it ever will, this is of course a natural occurrence, seen in humans too. kids eat a shitfuckton and just keep growing. AFTER full colonization, the mycelium will slow down its burning of calories, but still continue to do so in order to live, until there is nothing left and it slowly starves to death. but, at normal 75-80 degree temperatures, as in a house, the mycelium is burning the calories it needs to survive, at a faster rate than it would, say...in a fridge at 40 degrees. once again, just as humans.. all this correlation to humans..its not surprising they breathe oxygen too

My cakes were also much longer at their jars than they needed to be. Only difference I've noticed is that those overdone cakes had grown their mycelia through the dry verm layer. I suppose there's no harm done since those cakes have got bigger flushes than the ones that I birthed after full colonization. You'll be fine.
