my homemade air conditioner

The heat is really getting to me, and I am currently awaiting an ac unit which will arrive in the next few days, so I had to do something.
I bought copper tubing, wrapped it in a coil, and attached it to a fan. I put a water pump in a cooler full of ice, which sucks up ice water, and pumps it through a tube attached to the copper wire. There is another tube attached to the fan, which pumps the ice water back into the cooler. It works pretty well.

Well, its 83 degrees outside, and its 71 degrees in here. So I would say it works fairly well.

Nice, I wonder if it's runner cheaper than a regular AC unit?

Definitely. The pump uses 13 watts of electricity, and the fan is 40 I believe.

Cool
For that I just take some 20 oz gatorade bottles, fill them with water, and toss them in the freezer. 4 at a time does the trick.

Does it contain enough water that you could leave it running overnight without it running out?

Well, the water recycles itself, so it never runs out. It's just a matter of keeping the water cold. During the day, I have to replace the ice several times, however at night, the ice is usually still there in the morning, since the temperature drops about 15 degrees at night here.

Pure pimpin! hey bayyybeeee, check out my portable fish pump powered AC unit * chick has sex on the spot, in newly air condictioned car backseat* Those fish pumps run on on a car battery( or smaller)
Imagine taking that think camping. One big ass ice chest of ice, and you can keep your TENT air conditioner-ed all weekend. Camping in the summer, 100 degrees outside, and a nice chilled 70 degree tent.
Props to you man, that pioneering ingenuity.
I bet it works both ways too, with hot water
The only flaw I see in the design, is the humidity problems. You might create a very humid indoor environment, very fast, Which is sometimes OK, but you need a clean house, or else bacteria grows on fabrics, and contams run wild. Have you kept a humidity gage in your AC room?
Way to go

There is no humidity generated by the unit, as it is a closed circuit system. It's a simple heat exchanger. My sister was the one who deserves the applause, as she gave me the idea (she is a mechanical engineer). : ) I love it.

So you keep the tank lidded? Good idea.
Have you had problems with water condensing on the coils, and dripping? That thing might actually be a DE-humidifier now that I think about it. If your house is humid it will drip everywhere under the coils, right?
Still, that's a very minor problem.
I bet this can save HUNDREDS per year in small living quarter electricity costs.

The compressor in your freezer is no more efficient than that of an aircon.
That said, pretty freakin sweet idea man! If you had a river nearby that you could pump cold water from this would be perfect!
My freezer is in the garage, so the heat doesn't end up in my house . I keep it in my bedroom with the door shut, because it can't cool the whole house, but its nice to have a nice cold bedroom.

Awesome. His looks much much bigger, and probably works a lot better.

That's a very cool unit your sister came up with there, props to her.

She's awesome at shit like that. For her senior project in college, she built an all terrain vehicle for under 500 dollars. It can go 45 MPH, and can tow quite a bit. It's kind of like a gator, for those of you who know what it is. Her thing has 6 wheel drive. It was pretty awesome.
