Huge outdoor grow.
    #5709761 - 06/04/06 12:16 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

OK I got a buddy with a ton of land and a barn thing full of aged horse manure + a horse ranch rite next to it. So we have a huge amount of horse pooh

I got an idea to dig a big 25 x 25 foot hole out in a woodsy area in a space that big and will dig it 5 inches down, and then add some spawn and spread it around then fill the rest with pooh and then add 1/8 inch of the dirt onto the top and water it. then cover witha tarp and wait 20 days. since I wont be using a ton of spawn so I will need to give it more than normal time to colonize. Then I will remove the tarp and (lol patch i dunno im new to outdoor) then wait 16 days and pick.

How does that sound?

You should super spawn. Just pasteurize 25 pounds of field capacity poo, spawn it and let it colonize then use all of that to spawn the bed. Also horse manure dries up very quickly so in order for it to work well you will need to mix in 25-50% composted horse manure or just top soil. And skip putting an 1/8 inch of dirt on top, a casing is not necessary at all for outdoors.

I think it was simply a suggestion to possibly speed up colonization and success, as the horse poo may have difficulty colonizing otherwise (?)

I liked the first idea to tell the truth.... because it does not require pasteurization. However, the only thing I question is the tarp. It seems like it may be too humid and harbor molds that grow along with the mycellium. I am uncertain though, as i have not attempted outdoor plots myself.

Instead of one mega-huge bed, make several smaller beds.

A clearing in the woods that size might also mean lots of direct sunlight... which is what you want to avoid.

Have several small patches or rails (long patches), scatered throughout the woodsy area. That's my advice.

to me, this sounds like your best advice yet.

Mycellium Running.
Several smaller beds in the woods in shady areas.

I'm sure you already considered.... just to check where the shade hits at different times during the day in order to get the most shade possible.

so shade is essential for outdoor growing?

I am a first timer indoor grower and i say why not try it outside too!!!!

I'll take one BRF cake and put it in the ground in the bushes where i saw mushroom grow before.

I am thinking of marking the place where i've put the BRF but don't have any ideas yet.....
