Mushroom Identity?
    #5709598 - 06/03/06 11:31 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Greetings.
I would appreciate it if someone could attempt to identify these for me.  They are sprouting in my large, overgrown backyard (Portland, Oregon).
I'm not going to run off and eat these based on any replies posted, so please don't hesitate to merely post your opinion of what they resemble or what they may be. Thanks
:crazy2:

Replies appreciated.  Thanks  :mushroom2:

Hi and welcome to the shroomery. Check out the rules post at the top of the forum. There you'll find good info about how to post a description, and what kinds of things to look for. One thing you should do with these mushrooms is a spore print. Cut the caps off at the top of the stem. Place the cap gills down on a white piece of paper. Cover with a glass and look at it in a couple of hours or even over night. The color of the spores is a useful indicator.

All that being said, I suspect that you either have Panoleus subbalteatus, a weak hallucinogen, or Paneolina foenescii, an inactive look-alike. The main differentiating factor is that spore print. Jet black for the Pan subbs, dark brown for the Pan foes.

Let us know the results, and nice pictures!

Those are the brown-spored, non-active, lawn-dwelling mushroom, Panaeolina foenisecii.
