Right now I'm just treadin water in college....no major and average grades. But, I feel like I need to make a difference somehow and would like to leave this country that is poisoning my mind. The thought of spending two years somewhere in the world helping people sounds real exciting to me.
Any of yall have any stories about a friend or family member that did it?

i think thats awesome. i would love to join peace corps. it'd be a great experience and you could probably learn alot of things college won't teach you.

my brother is in the Marines now, but I think after his 10 years, if he survives, he wants to go into the peace corps.
sorry, that's all I got for ya.

I was very, very seriously considering the Peace Corps for a while and spoke to a couple of old teacher-mentor figures in my life who had participated in the program. What I came away was a sense of it like this:
Essentially, the Peace Corps is like the U.S.' Public Relations wing of the CIA. It's a way of making the US look good, and a lot of what you're going to be doing is bureaucratic paperwork and filing reports. I hear the bureaucracy of it is really hellish, and that there's a lot of photo-posing and what-not.
Beyond that though, on a very small level, you really are making differences in people's lives. All the different jobs you can get through the peace corps - teaching people in small countries how to be small business owners, teaching English, setting up internet networks, helping farmers integrate new technology into their farming systems - they all give you a deeply personal sense of accomplishment because you've helped these people.
If you feel like you can balance the two, for a 26-month (no less) commitment...go for it.
-------------------- Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake. -Erik Davis

My best friend went after she graduated college. She basically hung out in Mozambique for a while and did nothing. I guess some parts actually do something, but nothing was in place. She really had no guidance or training. They kinda threw her into a village of a country that had been war torn for most of the 2nd half of the 20th century and said, teach them english.
Anyways, if you do decide to go in, when they ask you on the app, have you ever done any drugs? If so when and how often? Say: no, never. Drugs are bad. Or else they give you a ton of shit.

Yeah I was going to join after graduating college but then I read up that they only take you to places where they'll just dump you, and the way things are going now, America won't promise you=things will be shot to shit, I'm joining Woofing instead just to help those people out and farmers, because that way you can roam around wherever you like after your job is done

I have a friend that was in Costa Rica doing Peace Corps work, he loved it. Afterward he hitchhiked back to the States, coming up through Mexico. Apparently you get like $10,000 when you get out. On the negative side it's a 22(?) month commitment.
I'm seriously considering joining up at the end of next summer, hopefully being deployed sometime in spring 2010.
