I live in the carolina's and found these in the grass in my front yard this morning. They leave a black spore print and there is some blueing near the base of the stem. The stems themselves are whitish with reddish brown in them, and are hollow. They look to me like some sort of pan. what do ya'll think. Here's a couple picks:

Subbs don't typically grow in your front yard. Are you sure the spore print was black, really black? Those look more like Pan foes or some other inactive pan.
Sorry

Logically you would assume pan foes, but they look too big and light to me, also pan foes dont have black spore print. Subbs are possible or even pan semiovatus.

The print is REALLY black, here are some more pics. I hope they are active because there are thousands of them out there.

Also, check out these tiny Marasmius's that i found while looking for more subs. The are so tiny. only Milimeters across and never more than an inch tall. Incredible aren't they.

I have always found my SUBBs in lawns in yards, schools, parks, buisiness.....where ever you have a typical lawn
also in gardens, planters, planter beds, etc.......which have been ammended as so many commercial mixes have manure and composts in them but manure not essential
The lawns need no ammendments for SUBBs although manure added to lawns will increase occurences of Panaeolus species.......SUBBs have no problems growing on cut dry grass left behind in lawns from normal mowing and cut dry grass such as hay bales
Looks like you might have couple Pan. species there possibly even the weakly active Panaeolina castaneifolius which I have seen said repeatedly on this board to have brown spores but I have never seen this.....they are always black.....I dont see Panaeolus semiovatus / seperatus in any of those pics.
SUBBs and FOES in lawns can look identical and even touching each other only differing in spore color.....sometimes you have to print them all until you learn to spot the SUBBs without a print which can be a little difficult sometimes
I dont know which Pan there you got the black spores from as I definately see some black spored species.....the ones I question are the ones under the pic of the print....if those ALL are definately black spored in that pic then probably SUBBs which doesnt mean they are always strong enough to be 'active'
also very common in lawns next to Pans are deadly Conocybe which can look similiar except for spore color but you just IDd that Marasmius so you shouldnt have too much trouble thereno probs but caution
No Panaeolus is poisonous and always a possibility of being active. active
EDIT; be sure all your shrooms have black spores and are Pans as many deadly shrooms have brown and other colors

....oh, well- could be some other Pans. mixed in as well! forgot, sorry! But of the pics i'd say subbs or foes.
by the way, has anyone noticed that in a lot of field guides, foes are listed as active and subbs as inactive?? Just find it odd. perhaps outdated or misinformed.

yea, the concybe's were all around, and this other mushroom that I don't know what it is but I know it isn't active or anyhting, here it is: ( they were on the part of the grass where a tree was rmoved, must be living off dead roots.)

there are so many species of mushroom just in my back yard, it is amazing by the way, Those definatly don't look like semiovatus to me.

Looking at that second set of pics, I'd say it looks like you've got some subbs. Especially since that print is black without a doubt.

Ya Cure and yours were really Bluing up pretty good also
Good eye on the Cone heads (Conocybe)
as I dont have 100% veiw this is just for reference cause they are listed as a good edible so do not consider eating these at all.....what if Im wrong right?.....this is just for your own reference....that bottom pic is Psathyrella candolleana 'group' so common at the base of trees and forests, lawns, and definately one the most common 'yard' mushrooms encountered so a great one to become aquainted with

Something there says subb. I can't see crap on this monitor, everything looks like a cartoon That black print says subb., but the caps are pretty round. You say there's lots of 'em? get a pic of the upper stem with the gills in it if you can. In subbalteatus, the stem will taper up to the cap, and have a spiral fibrulose stem. The caps are generally an off round shape, where foens. generally have a nice round shaped cap. Those are interesting, I'll be back on my pc later.
peace
