Two Questions...
    #5706849 - 06/03/06 08:22 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

1. I heard that you can shake your partially colonized jars up, breaking the mycelium into bits--but it soon reattaches itself and covers all the substrate, is this true? Should I do this with BRF/Verm PF-cakes? If so when should I shake them?

2. If I were to break up my BRF/Verm PF-cakes to make a casing, would it work out ok if I just used vermiculite alone as a casing layer (bottom and top)?

Thanks :rasta:

Yes the jars are shaken and it distributes the mycelium so it colonizes faster. This is NOT done with BRF jars, you just let them sit there and colonize and eventually when there is a lot of myc just flip the jar over and tap the top of it (which would be the glass part.) Tap it so there is oxygen between the cake and the glass then let it finish upside down like that till its 100%.

Yes verm will work, but dont do a bottom layer only a top. Spend the 5 bucks and buy sphagnum peat moss from home depot and do 50/50 with verm.

If lazy yes verm will work.

thats with straight verm

th reason (you already know) is because it will disturb the vermiculite barrier thats preventing contams from getting into the jars

also look for peat moss under the name sphagnum moss
