i have three casing that are dung spawned with birdseed and cased with shpagnum moss and verm (50/50) directly into sterilite containers (made for office folders). i initiated pinning about two days ago and went to mist them and i saw something move!!!
there was a tiny brown spider crawling around in there. i got him out and squished him GOOD!(damn spider). these containers have snap on lids. do you think my casing is alright? i don't believe it could of gotton in there through the lid, but instead of pasterizing my dung this time i sterilized it via presser cooker (loaded in quart jars). do you think it was my sterilization process?

I once had many little nats flying around my terranium after casing 50/50+ and after sterlization. Lost them all. I don't know what to tell you, but keep a close watch.

I'd associate spiders and cobweb, just because I'm a dork.

Was it a spider or a spider mite? If it was a spider, you are ok. If it was a spider mite, you are probably going to have a hard time getting rid of them. Spider mites are very tiny... almost hard to see they are so small.

I would say spiders are perfectly natural and everything should be fine. Even if he laid eggs (she?), your operation should be over before they hatch.
It's the vultures you have to watch for. If you get one of those in your casing, your screwed!

You can borrow my cat she loves to eat spiders. She runs around outside, scoops em up with her paw and pops em into her mouth.
Then again she also loved pushing my casings off of the shelf one day and made quite a mess.
..maybe you'd like to borrow her on a more permanent basis.
