South Central Texas lawn mushroom
    #5702966 - 06/02/06 05:33 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I Found this mushroom on a grassy lawn in south central texas Between Austin and S.A.
They were found on a grassy area that is in the shade for the most part.

The gills are greyish with a hint of tan. After being picked for a couple hours they turned a dark brown. NO VEIL, I was crapping my pants until I saw this because it striking resembles a Cubensis.
Stem is rather consistent with all specimans in length,a little more then an inch long and 1/8th round. Color of stem is off white and hollow. Very smooth when rubbed.

Cap is idendtical to a Cubensis in color, though it is smooth, dry to the touch and some specimans are wavy. The average length across is an inch.

Spore Color is either dark dark brown or black. It is hard to tell because in the places where more spores were dropped it looks black as to where there were less it looked dark brown.

No Bruising apperent

Not much of a smell to it except a faint earthy smell.

When I first saw the little patch I was thrilled to see fungus because it had been a long time and had a moment of extra joy when the Cubensis lookalike appeard under me looking like a scene I have seen many times in my years of walking through cow fields.

It is not a cube though and I am still excited to see the little patch.

Sorry I have no picture.

Thanks to anyone who gives help and even for reading my post.

I know what you mean   people can hardly fathom my enthusiasm over a cluster of inedible or poisonous mushrooms, hehehe.  But I think they are fascinating, and just seeing mushrooms in all their different manifestations is awesome!  It's also a good sign that the ecosystem is healthy and in good enough shape for more mushroom seasons to come.
Not sure which mushroom that cube-look-a-like is though....

I wish I could have Snapped a shot of the the little cluster for the keepsake. But I did take my first print of the year next to a couple meaningless drawings so that will due just fine. And if they keep popping up every so often I will be ultra-pleased  .

Weeeell, some agarics fit that descrip, though the stem tends to be shorter.  Without a pic, that is about as accurate an ID i can provide.  :undecided:
