bluing of cake
    #5704074 - 06/02/06 01:11 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

hey all, SWIM just took a fully colonized cake out of a jar and placed it to grow yesterday, just checked today and there is some bluing on the sides of the cake. temps are 75-76ish; humidity 85+ish. It doesn't really look like a contam, it looks like what bluing would be like if touched a psych mushroom. Is this ok or is it a contam? I tried to upload a pic, but stupid shroomery upload won't let me or something.

thanks

totally ok.

blueing = dryness, or bruising.  if its blue where you touched it, its bruising.  if you didn't dunk, and especially because your humidity is too low, it will blue even where you don't touch it.  it could also be a combination of both.  i'd take it back out of the FC, dunk it, and figure out how to get your humidity up, that's not enough for cakes.

Its bruising its fine. You just didnt handle the cake as gently as u should have but it wont make a difference really.

yeah. you can get away with skipping dunking on the first flush, but its so much better if you do dunk. the fact that it blued so easy means its probably crying out for some extra moisture.

dunking it right in a clean jar is a perfect way to do it too.

and dont forget to work on that 85%RH thing. some regular misting in addition to whatever your current hum. setup is should push you over the top. if it stays where it is you'll see lots of pins that unfortunately won't wanna go anywhere.

I agree RH is way too low for cakes.
