So, I use to spend alot of time on this site about 3 years ago, and have done my share of growning, but now I feel the time has come to grow again and on a much larger scale.. Because I have been out of the loop for a while now, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for a substrate mixture that they like, (last time I was growin on honey nut Cheerios with great results ) but I was just have'n fun then but I want to find a substrate that would produce a high yeild.. I will be doing castings and the strain will be B+, Keepers creepers, and gulf coast .. anyone have any ideas?? also mabey some good casting mixtures as well??

I prefer to use filter patch spawn bags and have concocted the following recipe:
Substrate Mix for Spawn Bags
Yield: 4 large filter patch spawn bags
Ingredients: 48 Cups Shredded Horse Manure 24 Cups Vermiculite 16 ½ Cups Wild Bird Seed 4 Tablespoons Kelp Meal 6 Tablespoons Canola Oil 21 Cups Water
Directions: 1. Mix all dry ingredients together thoroughly. 2. Add water gradually and mix by hand. 3. Add Canola Oil. 4. Load bags evenly. 5. Pressure cook for 3 ½ hours @ 15 PSI. 6. Allow to cool for one hour and remove from cooker. 7. Impulse seal bags on setting 5 for 5 seconds. 8. Hang to cool.
I also use Blue Helix's Spawn Bag tek.

Nice, I like the sound of that Wronguy.. I figure the more I put in there the higher chance of contamination so the key i guess is to find the right balance point.. anyone have a "secret ingredient" for the casting mixture?

That is the best recipe ever! I am beginning to go slightly lighter on the oil and kelp (due to fermentation issues). And make sure to get COARSE grade vermiculite its a hundred times better then the fine shit.

Also, if you want to fruit in the bag, use that recipe to make 8 bags, they will weight approx. 2.5 pounds each as opposed to 5. Much more room to fruit... just inject with 60cc of healthy LC and that shit will be colonized in no time

I use either PFtek or bird seed to complete a few jars and then spawn the jars to poop.

the oil is for good fats. the kelp meal is a very good source of nitrogen and its plant based as opposed to blood meal... thats a plus in my eyes. You can add these things because you are going to sterilize the substrate. If you were only going to pasteurize, you would be much more limited. The mushrooms love the extra nutrition

I don't. you could but its so easy to just inject another bag... would be a good idea for an out door patch. Also remember that this isn't only poo, there is alot of grain and vermiculite mixed in. I think that straight poo does not spawn well because of its texture. With this recipe, the texture is much more defined, crisper. The mycelium can easily grab on...
But yeah, I just cut the recipe in-half, to make 2.5 pound bags. Inject with 60cc healthy LC incubate in darkness for 10-14 days - till fully colonized. then just expose to light and fruit in the bag. I have been getting results similar to Hydr0420's spawn bag tek... If I had a digital camera I'd do a nice write up... maybe ill get one soon.

In the recipee, is the birdseed already hydrated or added dry right out of the package? Also how deos doing it this way compare to just spawning wbs to hpoo? Is it quicker overall? More or less yield?

You need to aggitate the husk membrane until you see growth in the upper ischial callosities, or simply invest in a reverse pressure intractor and you wont even have to worry about it. thats what i use, my grandpa turned me onto it.

Also, if your sterilizing everything, wont there be a higher chance of contams later down the road due to the destruction of beneficial microorganisms?
