WBS Poll: floaties

Hey there. With WBS, some people remove the sunflower seeds and other stuff that floats when you soak. I was just wondering what the general consensus on this was. People have success both ways, but it would be cool to see what's more common. I personally just overflow the bucket it's in as part of the first rinse and most of the floaties go over the top with the overflowing water. It seems it would be hard NOT to remove them this way..

well, i would if i have floaters, but the dollar general birdseed that i got on memorial day was pretty sweet. 50 cents for 1lb of finch feed= o floaters... but i would, just because it is somehow related to karma

isn't the problem with sunflower seeds not with contamination, but they do not hold water well?

excess water generaly will pose a problem with bacterial contamination, fixing the water ratio is a bitch because it's absorbed by the hulls, seeds and some in the cavity of the seeds, after you soak it several hours and drain it, some will drain from that void and leave a nice puddle in the bottom of the jar, thats why it's recomended to buy WBS with fewer sunflower seeds or none at all

i haven't been removing mine lately and everything is fine...
but one prob. When not removing them, and then dumping out to rinse... all the floatie sunflower seeds collect at the bottom of the collander. Unless you mix it up real good you can scoop out a whole spoonfull of nuthin but SF seeds.
having said that... ditch the floaters not just sunflower seeds but everything that floats in general. it floats for a reason. It's hollow.

Would it be best to buy straight millet?
I was at the birdstore like 2 days ago (my jars are already colonizing so its too late) and they had a huge bin with a scooper of just all millet.
It wasn't colored millet it was white. She said its the best.

^ exactly. only reason to pick 'em out is because they aren't as "useful" as the rest. either way is fine though, depends how anal you are or how much free time you got (i know i got better things to do than pick floaties off!)

I have found that using 100% millet it becomes to smimey and sticks together making it hard to shake.

yeah, i've never tried straight millet (want to, i'll end up trying rye first) for the sole reason that it costs more than 8 bucks for 40 pounds at the pet sto.
One time there was a free little tiny bag of some other seed attached to it and the sample bag said it had "fungi-coat". I left it with the cashier to give to someone who could use it, said my birds don't like anything but the rough stuff.

The general concensus is to remove them but it isn't terribly important. I do simply because they float and when I pour off the water (to rinse the WBS a couple of times before filling up the jars) they go with the water. Problem solved.
