The effects of music on mushrooms
    #5702496 - 06/02/06 01:03 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Ahhh yes, as we all know, a plant that is grown with ambient classical melodies is more likely to thrive than is one grown with very loud, hard music, or none at all..

My hypotheses gentlemen, is that the addition of carefully selected classical music (and by classical I mean cream of Clapton of course) during all stages of cult-ivation:

Birdseed PREP-aration, Innoc-ulation, Inc-ubation, spawning to horse Def-ecation, casing, and fruiting...

That the potency will be increased perhaps ONE HUNDRED possibly even A THOUSAND FOLD!!!........ !!!!!!! ....arrr!

This is purely hypothetical of course...

My second hypothesis is that the introduction of dynamite will severely thwart the growth process and perhaps cause a small combustive reaction inside the growth receptacle

----Further discussion------

Though the effects of loud, harsh music on flora have been tested and observed, the idea of using good hard music, (ie... pantera, slayer, tool, stp, AiC, rage, ol dirty bastard, WU TANGG!!!!!) at lower decibel levels has yet to be implemented in a scientific experiment... The potential outcome for such studies has yet to be observed....

My apologies to all who have read this

You need to stay away from the new age/crackpot websites. Most plants don't respond to music unless you play it at such high volumes that it damages them.

PLANTS ! My friend these are not plants.

Please.

And for mick:

I play Tool for my special friends consistantly-they do enjoy it, they enjoy lateralus for it's insanity, aenima for it's hate and opiate for all the up.

And on Friday nights I sit and talk to them and we listen to Rage together.

I don't know man, I played tons of metal (slayer, pantera, etc.) when I was growing pot, and it definitely grew faster than when I wasn't playing alot of metal. That study has got to be done by haters, that don't like loud, high bass music. Or the results were barely different. Weed likes metal, I've seen it with my own two eyes.

i asked a psychologist how jazz was compared to playing classical music for children and he said anything but classical is crap... when going into the development of a child's brain.

I know we're speaking of fungus here but I thought this could be slightly relevant.

anything with a a faster beat , and higher frequencies (distortion?) is going to give off way more acoustical energy than a lower beat, and freq's. I have no doubts that a plant will react to music, and the type of music, differently than just silence. I have experienced this for myself. Yes, heavy metal has stimulated the growth of most high energy plants (cannibis) so they grew faster, but this didn't work on my moms orchids too well, as there was no noticeable difference.

Yet, a fungus is a little different isn't it? a mushroom doesnt react to wind stimulation as much as a plant would (hence music simulating almost the same effects, the pushing of air, but more concentration over the region), so it would make you wonder if the myc networks would be sensitive to these vibrations to stimulate growth, or the abscence of growth... considering even touching them with your finger damages the myc, perhaps bass could either damage it or at least massage it in ways no myc as ever experienced before....which may only be detremental.

Hence, such a study would take quite a while and would need much control, as to the fact that perhaps slower or faster patterns of sound may be as significant as trying to stimulate a child, or a plant, and a large variation in amplitudes would need to be tried due to the density of a myc colony.

A child needs more classical due to the fact that most compositions (especially the greats) are merely collections of very simple, easily detectable patterns. This stimulates the childs brain in helping it recognize these patterns, and thus furthering cognitive development.

A plant would have a better chance with metal, because a plant cant recognize the difference between say a riff and an archipeggio except for their speeds, which only translates into stimulative energy. The more wind you give a plant, the stronger the stalks become. But this is realitive to the plants natural metabolism. The same concept hits the metal/classical idea.

A mushroom colony usually lives underground, or in a log, and never sees wind or vibration unless its fruiting..... or a tree falls in the woods.......

do the mushies hear the sound???.....

man, im way too stoned for this...

ever seen mythbusters? they did a huge study on music on plants... had absolutely no discernable effect... reason: plants don't have ears or brains, therefore it's impossible for music to do anything to plants except make them grow long hair, smoke weed and hang out in your basement... the same applies to mushrooms.

Mythbusters are the worst when it comes to long term experiments. Every one they've done that requires more than a week was rushed through and beffudled. Those guys are special effects guys, not scientists.

Now i'll agree to some of the things they've proved/disproved..

but otherwise they are complete idiots.

Plants have a nervous system, and thus are sussceptible to vibrations. a week doesn't prove anything. it takes years to prove such an experiment and achieve an actual CONFIDENCE INTERVAL, and thats the one thing those baboons dont have in their wearhouse full of tricks....

time

actually, they did it over 3 months... can't exactally grow plants in a week

but even then, you don't need music for vibrations... walking on a floor causes those too... so does wind.

A mate did this with two dif plants in two dif rooms.

One with metal music
The other with nothing

The one with metal music was stronger & the buds bigger.

Same strain, same grow,

Also it has been noted talking to dope plants gets them to grow bigger & stronger.

Maybe the same applies with mushrooms.. there living things arn't they?

who knows

Music is a constant vibration, that can be played to the plant.

I wouldn't want to walk around my floor boards all day.

I rest with the "good vibrations" theory

Different phenotype  Ive had many a same genetic batch produce a varying array of types of plants.... Not to discredit your experiment, but thats not adequate proof. Ive wondered about this too though. Also, it makes more sense that something like classical music would work over metal... constant smooth vibrations, as apposed to rapidly varying harsh (distortion) sounds...

I like the idea though, and i would say keep going with it.

The classical music thing improving kids brains is bullshit - watch that episode of Bullshit with Penn and Teller and the only study done on this was conducted on uni students, and the effect lasted for about 2 hours.
You cant just extrapolate the data from uni students down to kids - its a big load of marketing crap, but by fuck is it working.

On the same strain of MJ - you and your brothers are the same strain, but you wont 100% alike.

Do actually test the music thing you need massive repetition - say 300 plants, clones preferably. That music/plant thing is an urban legend, - there are no experiments that show it to be the case.

As cool as the Ents are, plants have never been shown to have a nervous system. The closest they get is things like venus fly traps, but they do this without neurons.

i conducted an experiment using tomato plants. the plants exhibit better health and rate of growth with loud musics, loud being rock and roll, metal, and other such loudness. in my experiment, other music didnt seem to affect growht at all.

my hypothesis is that the the constant presence of deep, bassy noises caused some sort of improved circulation within the plant, or perhaps it invigorated the growth and reproduction of plant cells.

in any case, the only affect it had on the plants was improved rate of growth. any improved fruit was not observed. so it is a very remote chance that music will have any affect on potency when dealing with mushrooms.

worth a try, though.

Maybe setting up just some subs that play long tones of varying frequencies. Maybe even a binaural frequencies (one sub on either side of the plant, each sub producing a different long tone). Just some ideas.

Well, he does have a good point about the dynamite. I'm going to have to do several experiments myself, while watching very, very, very, very closely in order to observe the jars' behavior at a minimal distance.
