Pluteus salicinus
    #5702324 - 06/02/06 12:25 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I live in northern Illinois and think I found some Pluteus salicinus. From the pictures Ive seen they look exactly like what I found but I know that doesn't mean they are. I found them growing of the roots of an old tree after some heavy raining. The developing pins on the tree roots were blue but the more mature one were white. The gills were a very light tan. Can someone help me with what these are? Sorry no picture yet gotta borrow digi cam from my brother-in-law. Gonna take a spore print later too.

Sounds interesting.

I find Pluteus specimens (the more common inactive ones) all the time, growing on wood.. From what I understand, Pluteus salicinus is very similar to other Pluteus species. It can look almost identical except that salicinus bruises blue on the very white stalk. it is also very rarely found.

A few resources..

http://www.mushroomexpert.com/pluteus_salicinus.html

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/pluteussalicinus1.htm

Do the spore print, bring back some mature specimens.. if they are just pins, it would be best t leave them be to give a chance to mature.

Hopefully with the spore print and/or pictures we will be able to help more as far as an ID goes.

The picture at http://www.mushroomjohn.com/pluteussalicinus1.htm looks very similar to the immature mushrooms that I saw especially because of the color. There were both mature and lots of immature blue/green mushrooms. I was with a friend and he took one of the mature and we left the rest alone until we learned a little more. Sorry I do not have the mushroom with me but right after he picked it there was no immediate reaction. Ill find out details about the spore print later when I talk to my friend, and Ill try to get some pictures up soon.

By took, do you mean picked and brought back home or "took" as in ate?
If the friend ate it, that is very bad and dangerous practice.

By took I mean back home to make a spore print it was very close to his house and I had to leave anyway. I grow my own EQ cubies so we have no need to risk our lives.

Oh, good.. just making sure. :smirk:

Not trying to insult your intelligence - you would be surprised how many times I've seen people who have eaten random stuff in here because they thought it looked like something.

lol yea people do strange things. Yea with the mushrooms to me doesn't matter if they are active or not I just would like to identify them. Very interesting the pins starting out blue/green to me at least.

It's impossible to reply to a thread more than 30 days old without receiving a warning.  In the future I suggest you pay attention to that.
