I have searched google, dell and all my PC world mags. I wanna figure this out so I don't have to call tech support.
The problem is this. My monitor will go black for no reason. My music keeps playing and the computer will still be on.
Any help is appreciated.

It's not your screen-saver, is it?

has happened to me, i ended up needing to get a new monitor
check your connections i dont think its a software problem, you may just have fried the monitor if it's very old

disable the shutoff for the monitor, right click the desktiop, display properties and it's should be under screen saver

Yeah if it's not your screensaver, it's either the monitor or video card - probably the monitor.

Yes, its does sound like a monitor and/or vidcard problem as Tren said. But start with making sure the connections are tight before you go monitor shopping.

does it happen after you've not been actively using the computer? if so, that could be a function in your control panel/power options.... you can set it to never turn your monitor off....
of course, when the monitor goes black in this instance, pressing a key or using your mouse should rememdy it... if not, still might be worth trying this out.

> My monitor will go black for no reason. > Dell Inspiron 1200
Inspiron computers are laptops, not desktops. Are you using an external monitor or are you talking about the LCD display of the laptop? Does the "monitor" come back to life if you press a key on the keyboard? If not, how do you get the display to turn back on?
As others have said, my initial guess would be the power setting on the OS turning the display off after an interval of inactivity, or a screen saver kicking in. More details would be very helpful in understanding your problem. As it stands, we know more about your feelings towards Dell tech support than the problems with your laptop.
Assuming that it is a laptop display we are talking about and assuming it is not a software/OS issue....
When the screen goes black, take a flash light and shine it into the display. Can you see a faint image of the display or is it still completely black? If you can see a faint image, then you have a bad inverter. If not, then you have a bad display assembly or a bad logic board. Hook up an external monitor. When the internal display goes out, does the external display also go out? If so, you have a bad logic board, if not, you have a bad display assembly. We can rule out a bad "lid closed" switch because your computer continues to play music when the display goes black, meaning it isn't in sleep mode.

it may be your back light. they cost about 4 bills. ours did the same thing except once it blew it never came back. take your computer in a dark place and see if the monitor is barely on.
