I'm attempting to grow Shitake and Lion's Mane for the first time. I ordered plug spawn from FP and did up 7 shitake logs and 3 with Lion's Mane, all on oak logs. These are going to take a long time yet even being in the basement with constant temps so I'm trying another method to get results faster. I dropped a few leftover plugs into jars of sterilized rye grain but most were struck with contamination. I have one shitake jar that is about half colonized but it stalled and the mycylium looks really weak so I'm trying to decide what to do with it. Maybe I'll just toss it into a tray and cover it with 50/50 to see what happens. I'm going to try a few more jars of rye and if they look better I'll use them to innoculate a tray of straw and wheat bran to see if I can get that to colonize. If you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. I still have a few plugs left so if my agar ever gets here I'm going to attemp to transfer to some agar plates for the first time maybe then I can get a more sterile transfer to the rye. Otherwise I might just case the left over plugs to see if they will fruit and give me a spore print to work from. Then at least I could try a honeywater jar.

for shittake use saw dust-bran jars in a 4 to 1 ratio
4 parts saw dust, 1 part bran
that's the substrait i'm sueing for oysters as well. THe oysters really seem to like the butternut wood. the shiitake would prob fair better on oak,
That's what i'm doing. lucky my shcool has a wood shop so i can get the shavings and dust there. THere are otehr types of wood that work, their listed in the "CULTIVATOR"
stay away from conifers pine, cedar etc

I have grow psychadelic mushrooms in the past in monotub set ups and enjoyed the process and also really enjoy culinary mushrooms.

I was thinking I would like to start some cubensis again after a hiatus and would love to grow some standard edibles as well; my favorite being shiitake maitake, oyster, button, and Lions Mane. I have been reading Paul Stament's book on growing and really like the tray set ups he showed as it reminded me of the monotubs. I see most people fruiting oysters and lions mane from bags on shelves but in his book he showed one method of fruiting cluster-growing mushrooms in trays, with a plastic template over the casing with rows of large holes for the clusters to grow.

So, i was thinking perhaps I could build a fruiting chamber with shelving inside and do multiple species simultaneously? In his book each species is layed out with its basic temp/humidity requirements and I do not have the book on me but unless anyone know differently I assume I can grow species with similar specs together correct? (for instance I noticed King Oysters require a lower temperature to get the properly shaped large mushroom)

Anyone else doing multi-species fruiting chambers or have any advice?

I've noticed that a lot of the species in GGMM handbook have similar requirements as well, looking abroad at newer research, these specifications are essentially the same across the board 20+ years later.

However. In my experience not all are created equal and will not respond properly in all given scenarios.

I grow predominately oyster mushrooms.  Non stop fresh air during pinning and ripening.  I keep fans blowing in the grow room to help keep the caps from getting too wet and promoting mycelium or bacteria from forming.  Nothing uglier than a fuzzy oyster cap.

Point being - If I put my Agerita in there - they love the condensing fog, but the caps can't handle the volume of air flow - even with it being so wet and humid, they will still dry out.

King Oysters are the same way, you will find they don't like direct air flow.  You can multi grow in the same area - humidity is humidity, but you may find yourself in a better position if you can partition or semi-divide your grow room to help create a niche zone for each species.  Plastic for the win.

I have just decided to start growing more edibles. So far I have only grown cubes and oysters but I have some shiitake and wine cap spawn in the post.

Im just changing jobs come January and will have almost infinite amounts of fresh wood chip (im a tree surgeon) so can't wait to get growing.

I started my interest in mushroom cultivation by growing psilo mushrooms, but recently started an oyster mushroom grow and am considering trying to grow reishi!

Just started a batch of blue oysters on sawdust here! I also have some Pulmonarius and blue oyster mycelium growing on rye for the first time. On day 3 of the grain spawn and all 4 masters look like they're taking off! Must have done something right...

The Pulmonarius are really bumpin' they have multiple mycelial points started with several spots already about the size of a dime! Super excited about this new hobby, best of luck to all just getting involved.

Not EVERYONE is a druggie here lol. You can grow regular Mushrooms all year round can’t you? I’ve done Basil and a few other plants that I use a lot but would love to grow me some Chestnut Mushrooms but just wouldn’t know where to begin lol 😂

Is it done in pretty much the same way?

You can grow mushrooms year-round if you do them indoors. You must also choose the right ones for the time of year it is. unless you have a climate-controlled room to grow in. I grow in my basement so I pick the strain to grow by the temp in my basement. Oyster mushrooms are where you should start. You will soon be able to grow others.

Ah ok, so basically you just grow them in the same way? No specialist changed etc? I’d love to grow some Mushrooms to eat 😋

I am not sure what you mean by in the same way. I did not read this whole thread again. All mushrooms are grown in the same way. The only thing that will change is the substrate you will use. The temperature they are grown in. And the humidity they like. So there are some variables. But you can still grow even if these conditions are not optimal. But the results will vary.

You can PM me and I will answer all the questions that I have answers to. If you are really wanting to try and grow.
