are my chances of contamination greatest when i first inoculate my jars, or can they just as easily be contaminated when the mycelum is growing?

If you pressure cook them and then be really clean during inoculation, you shouldnt get contams

Unless you're place is really dirty

no
inoculation is a key time
if the syringe is clean and the spores/water are clean then there won't be any "random" contams during colonization

yes, but the more mycelum growth the harder for bacteria to get a hold and start contaminating, right?

it's not just about strong mycellial growth.
if you 1 do inoculation point and that part is kicking ass, but the other side of the jar has contams, the contams are going to win every time
even if 75% was covered by bomb ass rhyzomorphic mycellium and there was 5% contam'd, 20% uncolonized, i'd throw that jar out.

It is my experience that most contams happen during the inoculation stage.

When colonizing you have a barrier of vermiculite or a contam filter to protect you. There by eliminating contams during incubation.

Contams that appear during incubation are from inoculation over half of the time, probably almost all of the time.

If you pressure cook and remove the foil after, inoculation should be your only concern for contams until you spawn.
