When does becoming to attatched to something become unhealthy?
I think I have that problem with my music. After countless years of my cd's going missing and people putting nicks/scratches on my guitars....I've become quite anal.
And it's not just in only material form either. I'm very attatched to the music I write(even though it's nothing fantastic). I honestly wouldn't be able to hold back from inflicting bodily harm if someone stole my music and started getting famous for it. Obviously, I know this situation is very improbable, but it still doesn't change the fact that I have major rage thinking about it
I just found out this one slimeball was trying to get me to come over and jam with his "band" to teach them all my stuff so, I found out later, could play it without me....all because he really digs it. That is LOWER than low and I would have to take physical action if it would of went through.
Does that make me a bad person? Music almost seems WAY to important to me compared to some people. It's the best thing that's ever been in my life.

Maybe you are a little ahead of youreslf with somebody getting big off your music and all that, but that is fucking ridiculous. You have every right to be mad, and I agree with you 100%. What a shitty person to do that, I would have too much shame to do that to someone and write it off as my own music.

To quote the Stones, it's the singer not the song.
Covers often feel cheap and tasteless, but exceptions to this are plentiful. Sometimes a new rendition can breath life and spirit into a song that was well-written, but not performed with the right energy. One example of this is Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower.
Led Zeppelin represents the mildly sleazier side of this, with songs such as "Dazed and Confused" It was written originally by some New York no-name, about a bad acid trip, complete with the bassline which ought to be familiar to any rock fan. Jimmy Page got the Yardbird's to rewrite portions of the lyrics and added intensity on the guitar, performing the song as "I'm Confused". When the Yardbirds disintegrated and Page brought Zeppelin together (originally as "The New Yardbirds" until it became evident that they'd be so much more) they kept the song in their repetoire, further rewriting it, adding more violin bowing on guitar, adding John Bonham's indomitable presence on drums, adding Plant's distinctive emotive voice, but keeping the whole thing built around that stolen baseline, and playing it under its original name, Dazed and Confused. Was this wrong? I doesn't feel like it to me, by virtue of the fact that the song had absolutely none of the vitality until Zeppelin got hold of it. In fact much of Zeppelin's early work (particularly Zeppelin I) was just reworked versions of older blues songs, since they didn't have time for much songwriting before setting out on their first rounds of tours.
Good songwriting is all well and good, but how the music is recieved has much more to do with how it's performed. On the other hand, if those guys were just trying to snag your entire repetoire, that's a different issue, and seems like it might be cause to be a little miffed. But if the guy dug your stuff so much, it seems odd that he wanted to learn all your songs but not keep you in a band as a contributing songwriter.
As for guitars getting scratched, that's an issue that I see just cause to be anal about. Them things can get pricey (that's why I play harmonica, it's only ~$15 when I need a new harp)
Personally, I'm attached to music in general, in that I couldn't picture being able to tolerate living my life without getting my music fix at least every day or two. Whenever I'm at home, I've always got music playing over my 8-speaker soundsystem (the current best-of playlist that I've got on shuffle is about 3 and a half days long)

Well said. I agree totally with it all.
I totally admit my stuff isn't that good...so it has nothing to do with being "full" of myself. But it's pretty safe to say after what everyone told me, and just knowing this person in general, that he just wanted me to come to a few jams to learn all my stuff. As soon as they all learned it, I'd be kicked out. Not cool.
I think covers are an awesome idea. But stealing music isn't.
