Identification please
    #5697945 - 06/01/06 03:28 AM (15 years, 16 days ago)

A friend and I found these mushrooms on his property in central Texas 30 miles south or so from Austin. They are obviously growing in cow dung. The cows are longhorns and all they eat is grass. The mushrooms were growing only on the patties near the river that runs through the property. It has rained for the past 3 days here so there were quite a few. I tried to get a spore print from the largest one but the cap kind of fell apart. It is hard to see from the picture, but the large one was completely covered in white fuzz prior to picking. Its cap was white but when we got home it turned very dark Gray. The small ones are about an inch or so in height and maybe 1/4 inch in diameter on the cap. Basically, I would like to know what they are and if they are OK for ingestion or if I should get rid of them as soon as possible. I think they are not the mushrooms I am looking for. Any help is appreciated and if any more information is necessary for identification , I will do my best to provide the information.

Thanks!

This is just a guess (I'm practicing my ID skills) but they might belong to the Inky Caps. Not active. You dont want to eat these, at least until someone knowledgable says otherwise.

You'll find out if they are - if you leave them for a day or two they'll turn to a big pile of black inky goop.
Coprinus niveus perhaps - although you did say it was totally white?

Yes, those look like Coprinus specimens to me too.

It was a little hard to say because it was pretty dark out but I am confident in saying the mushroom was totally white/ off white with maybe a light blue tint to the cap. I wanted to get another picture of the cap but by the time I got home the caps were all dark gray, quite different from what we saw in the field. I left them over at my friend's house but I will look to see if they are black goo in a little bit. I did find 2 mushrooms that had already shriveled and died in the field and they almost resembled soggy celery or something like that. I guess we will see what these are in the next day or so. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

The last picture with the larger mushroom looks a lot like Panaeolus semiovatus to my eye. Its large and smoothly fleshed appearance could just as well be due to your flash... the picture looks slightly washed. Did you notice an annulus that we may not be able to see? The others are certainly Coprinus of some sort.

georgem

EDIT: I just noticed upon rereading your description there is mention of fine hairs. If this is the case I would retract Panaeolus semiovatus as a possibility as it us typically a smooth viscid mushroom.

Well, we may go hunting again tonight or tomorow so we will see if anything comes up on thoes trips. It is a shame that these mushrooms are nothing special, I would say we saw about 600 or so of them. Oh well, it wouldnt be called hunting if it were easy.
