I seem to remember reading somewhere (a paul stamets book I think)that he does not know of any mushroom that bruises blue and drops a spore print of dark purplish brown to purplish black that is poisonous (and I think he went so far as to say that is not a psilocybin mushroom)

I was just wonder if some of you more experienced mushroom hunters have found this to be true especially those of you who like in the Pacific north west between Astoria (OR) and Bellingham (WA)

I trust Stamets, I just don't trust my memory that it was Stamets who said it

He does indeed say that in Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World. However, I am always wary of these sort of general rule of thumb type comments. Especially considering that there are likely 100s of species of mushrooms in North America that are unknown to science.

However, if you have a mushroom with those characteristics, you at least know what section of the field guide to look in.

Be wary of this kind of rule because I (we?) have seen many times inexperienced and over-enthusiastic hunters just wanting their find to bruise blue so much that they convince themselves that it has even though in reality it's not even close. Seems they want to trip so bad they hallucinate blue before they've even found anything active. :S Same goes with identifying the "correct" spore print colour.

And I will also add that I think an additional rule is that the mushroom has gills. I think there are boisonous boletes that bruise blue, although I am unsure of their spore print colour. But I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped spores that a over-eager hunter could interpret as "purple/brown/black".

Good point wombat. The blue staining boletes can be quite unpleasant. They typically have greenish looking spores, but we've seen tons of people mistake brown bruising for blue. I'm sure lots could see purple/brown/black when they are green. Especially when people really want them to be active.

Hey thanks for including the comment about the gills. I know I had read that but didn't remember it until you mentioned it. I'm a pretty cautious and patient guy, but its always good to be reminded of such things anyway
