County wins award for marijuana enforcement By Leader Staff Writer
Shawano County law enforcement was recently honored as having the highest number of arrests of both indoor and outdoor marijuana growers in 2005.
The sheriff’s department picked up an award for its enforcement efforts at the Wisconsin Cannabis Eradication and Suppression Effort (CEASE) conference held at Camp McCoy on May 19.
CEASE is a state program funded by the Department of Justice.
Throughout 2005, Shawano County Investigators Arthur Collins, Keith Sorlie and Richard Wright conducted investigations into the whereabouts of suspected grows.
Collins attributed the award to aggressive enforcement rather than an abnormally high incidence of marijuana growing in the county.
“I don’t think we’re the pot growing capitol or anything,” he said.
Collins said a lot of the success has to do with tips that authorities get from informants.
“We’ve had some nice breaks,” he said. “We’ve been able to identify suspects and make cases against them.”
There were 16 arrests in 2005 for growing marijuana. While that may not seem like a big number, the value of what those suspects were cultivating is impressive.
“I would estimate we stopped $150,000 to $200,000 worth of marijuana from hitting the street,” Collins said.
“Marijuana is the biggest drug problem we have in this county, followed by cocaine,” Collins said.
The investigators were assisted by other members of the Shawano County Sheriffs Department, who provided information and assisted in other ways to successfully investigate marijuana growing operations.
Shawano County District Attorney Gary Robert Bruno and his staff were of great assistance in providing legal advice and preparing search warrants and other legal documents as needed, the sheriff’s department said.
City of Shawano Police officers also provided investigative assistance and information. Police officers Ryan Atkinson, Adam Bieber and Dan Conradt were very involved in these investigations.
The Stockbridge Munsee Police were also involved, including Investigator Jim Hoffman and Deputy Todd Otradovec. The Menominee Tribal Police and Menominee County Sheriff's Department also helped in some of the Investigations.
“All of the above individuals spent many hours performing the various tasks involved in doing a successful marijuana grow operation leading to arrest,” said chief deputy Steve Conradt.

<<“Marijuana is the biggest drug problem we have in this county, followed by cocaine,” Collins said.>>
This really makes no sense because the pig doesn't elaborate at all. Is it actually a problem there, ie are people getting robbed, raped, etc because of marijuana, or is he claiming it's a problem because of the fact that marijuana is simply illegal? If my suspicions are correct, I'd be willing to bet it's the latter. The fact that it alters the mind doesn't automatically entitle it to being "problematic". If this cop got his head out of his ass, he'd clearly see that legally obtained alcohol is the number one "drug problem" in his area, as with any other county.
