Act Locally!
    #5699119 - 06/01/06 11:06 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

"I thought about my space/ and it really got me down/ it got me so down, I got me a headache." --Frank Black
I keep reading all these global warming write-ups, and stories like the tar-sand mines in Alberta; and damn, I really worry about the future of mankind.
But it just doesn't get much more relevant than Think Globally, Act Locally.
Somebody brought up Paul Stamets recently, somewhat disparagingly.
I think they meant his forum doesn't have the huge flushes we crave.
However, for anyone concerned about the environment, especially those of you who enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and natural surroundings, Stamets and fungi dot com offer an affordable way to better your immediate environment.
At the last three places I lived, I sowed the soil with mycorrhyzae: a form of fungus that lives underground for all or some of its life cycle, bonding symbiotically with the roots of various plants.
Some of these form fruit bodies, others do not.
They work by a) saprophytizing organic material around the roots, thereby increasing uptake of nitrogen and nutrients, and b) by inducing much greater growth of root hairs and therefore roots, by the mechanism of attaching to the root hairs.
I routinely, at all of these places I lived, sowed the grassy areas with the plant version of the mycorrhyzae, and the park areas with the tree version.
Poor soil, which we find all over the country, often comes from either overuse by agriculture or from contamination by petrochemicals.
Those ChemGreen perfect lawns often have none of the indigenous beneficial organisms, due to application of pesticides and fungicides.
These mycorrhyzae offer a way to reintroduce native North American beneficial fungus to North American soil.
And they don't cost much, either. Catalog page for MycoGrow products
If you do reforestation volunteer work, you probably have already used this or a similar product.
But you don't have to attend a formal planting project to do something about soil bleaching and deforestation.
Guerilla inoculation of the soil around your home, or the soil you walk on during a hiking trip, helps native species immensely.
As I posted before, filamentous fungus can break down petrochemicals in soil and organic media; Oyster mushrooms can even digest crude oil.
So I leave it up to you.
MycoGrow tree tabs cost, what? ten bucks for one hundred?
You can make a big difference with one hundred tabs.
I want to have kids, and I intend to do everything within my power to overcome greed and waste within myself as without, in order to secure some environmental sanctity for their generation.
I hope you do the same, in some small way.
Remember: no act of kindness, however small, ever goes to waste.

Peace

Amen!!! Keep up spreading the word...I really think there needs to be more people thinking of these things, instead of the mundane bullshit going on that doesn't matter...*sigh*

That's very cool of you to do this, thanks for caring. I think Paul Stamets is doing a lot of great stuff with mushrooms, particularly the filtration applications, such as a bed of mushrooms between the pig barn and the stream. That's awesome stuff. :peace:
