Sorry... Spicy tuna roll asked about storing LC syringes and you responded...

"I only make and use them immediately, but you can keep your jar of LC in the fridge for many months and simply take it out and suck up some mycelium whenever you need to inoculate some jars."

....don't ask me how I missed it? hmmm....

OK...love the method, used Karo and some mycelium from a cake that was growing really really slow (only half way and others are completely done almost). When using Mycelium from a cake, is it OK if some vermiculite is in the LC with the mycelium? There is a trace amount, only a few grains and I sterilized everything with alcohol (except the inside of the jar and the tweezers, I boiled the hell out of both before making the LC). I put a decent amount of mycelium in the culture too and I use my closet for everything (Close the door, Oust the air, wait for 5 mins for the air to settle, re-oust, use hand sanitizer on my hands and the outside of the jars, wore a dust mask......all the good stuff). Thanks for your time!

I don`t see why there would be a problem as long as it doesn`t contam. Just make sure when you are sucking it into the syringe that you don`t get it too because it might plug the syringe.

I'm about as new as can be at this game. i got my first syringe in the mail on the 12th.  this morning i cast two 1/4 pint cakes in a couple of mini loaf pans using the 50/50+ tek. while all that has been going on i tried my hand at a few LC jars only to meet with disappointment, but one did work. i used that one LC jar to make a syringe start another LC and inoculate 4 WBS jars.  that was 3 days ago and i have white shit everywhere.  the only time ill use spores again is to stat an LC with. :syringe:

That pretty much the only things I use mine for as well. LC is the best way to go, thats for sure but it also can contam alot easier then cakes as well

Well I have never had one contam on me yet. Not sure if I am just careful with the process or if its not as susceptible to contamination as ppl say, but yeah - never a problem with many open air LC innoculations from a spore print.

I had a couple of LC's at the back of the fridge freeze solid on me the other day (the fridge was too low). I defrosted them and they were still viable - eight jars all colonised without a hitch.

I had one out of 12 cantam on me but it had nothing to do with this process, I did it all by my self(lol).

Use a larger amount of LC to inoculate your jars, and you reduce the time that any potential contams can take hold. I use about 7cc of LC per jar.

It was the LC that contamed on me. I stupidly didn`t check wich syringe I had in my hand when I started but there was crap in it from before(I knew I just should have thrown it away but got side tracked) thank god I noticed it after the first LC or I would have nailed them all, lucky me or it could have been the nightmare I dream about(lol)

I just did this tek 2 days ago and now there is lots of stuff (mycelium I hope) settled at the bottom. It clouds the jar when shaken. So I think it's good to go. My first LC. Thanks _oTTo_!!

Additionally, I put the jars into a ziplock that I swabbed with alcohol immediately after inoculation. Before I started I sprayed the whole kitchen with 5% bleach water solution, and then used Oust before taking the jars out of the pot.

Is "karo" short for something? Or will it say just that on the jar?

Karo is the name brand. Get Karo light, "with real vanilla". You can't miss it.

The stuff that has settled at the bottom is sediments from the honey - not mycelium, but keep swirling it every day and it dissolves again. While the mycelium grows and consumes the nutrients, the sediment seems to dissapear.

i made a LC last week (after reading this tek) with a 1/2 pint wide mouth canning jar. i have a PC so i just boiled some water for a while filled the jar with that added some honey and a small piece of a paper clip for a stirring rod. i then PC'd if for about 20-25 min. let it sit overnight then injected a half syringe of spore solution on accident. the reason that i used a half syringe (about 5cc) was because when i made the hole for the syringe needle in the lid i sealed it with silicone so when i inserted the syringe it caused a vacuum and sucked in the content of the syringe by itself. OK so after a week of it mixing at around 80 degrees nothing really happened the water still had a yellowish hue and there was minimal growth. was it because i used to much spore solution of that the jar was air tight? i have since made a second hole in the lid that is about a 1/2 inch big and silicone a piece of tyvek over it as a breather hole. i haven't started the the process of making the new LC until i get some feedback though and the syringe that i used was good i used it in a previous successful grow... thanks in advance...

IMO - I think that you are trying to be too technical with it - for your first attempt, forget the spot of silicon over your hole.

Forget about the paperclip and the PC - just steam sterilise your LC.

Just cover the hole with the foil, and dont forget to shake well after making and sterilsing your LC - this aerates your mixture and encourages growth.

Then Innoc with a scraping of a print or a bit of a spore syringe, and re-cover the hole with the foil lid.

How many jars do you think I could inoculate after I make a LC with a 1 pint jar?
