Law of exchange?

I have a quote, I *think* I may have come up with it...but if anyone here recognizes it, I would be grateful to identify it's true author. It is;
"In order to gain somthing you have never had, you must be willing to do somthing you have never done."
How do you guys feel about this? This quote reminds me of an alchemical "law of equivilent exchange".
I feel that right now in my life, the one thing I desire most I must pay a price for...or at least make a sacrafice. How do you guys feel about this kind of thinking?
Discuss.

I've heard of somthing similar before...Good Quote, but it's all very broad and general at the moment. That thinking could be relivant to many different situations... If there is somthing conflicting with achieving somthing else, then it must go. If you have bad behaviors or habits stoping you from being somwhere, then they must go. I once heard somone tell me that life is a process of trade off's, we all eventually get used to it. I spose learning also to recognize when the price of sacrifice is hidden before going and stepping into anything.
Any decision must be based on more factors then just whether having it is worth the price or sacrifice involved. Unfortunately, we can not have without sacrifice...(I feel like Im being trapped now).
Do thoughts also work on this exchange law? Does aquiring new information push out the old?
If you have never had somthing, why wish to have it?

Yeah, opportunity cost

That is generally the way things work, since you can't have everything.
