So I went to my local health food store for rye berries and all they had was flaked rye. Is this useable as a spawn substrate?

What is it? If it's been flattened and toasted like corn flakes, no. It would get soggy when you rehydrated it. You can use millet. If you want rye, just ask them to order a bag for you. It usually comes in 25 pound bags. Be sure to get organic rye berries and there won't be any herbicide or pesticide on them.

check some logs for popcorn.
but i just got done working with some millet for some golden oyster.
here is my suggestion.
i got water boiling and threw millet into water, covered, and simmered for an hour. then drained it, filled jars halfway, used polyfil as filter and pc'ed it for an hour.
now i did 10 jars, the 5 jars on the bottom the millet popped. the 5 jars on the top didn't.
the jars that popped seem to be growing. the jars that didn't pop show zero growth.
so my suggestion for you is to
A: boil the millet instead of simmer for one hour. B: soak for 24 hours
but make sure them millet pop sometime, and make sure you only fill your jars halfway or when they pop in the pc your jars could get overfilled.
but with the millet i ended up with this cloudy gray stuff growing on the bottom and then about a week later bright white myco started growing at the top. not sure what the stuff at the bottom is im thinking it might either be wet spot...or just the myco at early stages. if it was contaim im sure it was because i didn't soak overnight....so i suggest doing that.
basicly with millet just follow any WBS tek

I was shopping yesterday at a local organic store. I came across the same flakes you are talking about. I don't know how well they will work. All the Rye Berries were jam packed w/ bugs. I just finished PCing a mix of Popcorn (soaked 24hrs) and a half and half millet barely mix (soaked 10hrs). Both were then simmered for 1 hour. Some of the barely popped, but very little. I washed it to clear out the starch. 4 Jars just finished PCing and look great.
