The Religion (belief system) Conspiracy
    #569051 - 03/03/02 09:39 PM (22 years, 30 days ago)

They're all bullshit. I'm not just being polemical.
Religion is for people who can't/don't think critically. The idea is to give them guidance (often this is just a euphemism for control) so they don't fuck things up. Unfortunately, most religions can't be amended. Zen Buddhism, maybe, but I don't really consider that a religion, it's more like a spiritual philosophy.

Read some Joseph Campbell ("Myths to Live By" or check out "the Power of Myth" series). Then cross-reference that with ANY RELIGIOUS TEXT (or any New Age hooey). Don't be a dupe.

Religions all suck because the leaders are power-hungry. I don't think anybody would put down the teachings of Christ or Moses or Buddha, but over time ordinary men try to use the belief system to control people. And that is detrimental to societal evolution.

Sclorch, I think it is strange that you bring up Joseph Campbell's work up as somekind of reason behind your limited view that religion is only about control and guidance for ignorant people. Campbell really wouldn't support your one sided view. I've read "the hero with a thousand faces" and watched the excellent "Power of Myth" series... one conclusion I am drawing from that is that man is a religious creature that needs myths. So religion is a mythology that people use to survive. That religions have oppressive elements is nothing new and is no reason to say that they are 'bullshit'.

Haven't read these yet----I agree that religion is bad.
The traditions---I have found helpful to the masses who aren't deep thinkers. They are a way for these poor folks to have a kind of second hand experience of spirituality. The problem with this is that it is set up to have coruption enter in and leaders to then take advantage of the very ones the system was set up to help.

I've often wondered if Budda would shed tears that people follow him....he was just trying to make sense out of the chaos that surrounded him....

Where a keybord goes wrong:

Typos. Keyboards are fallible (unlike the Pope - ya, right).

actually, there is another design of keyboard that allows you to type faster, but they didt use it because it caused the type-writer to get stuck too much. they changed the order of the keys to slow the rate at which people typed. they keep the same design today because its what people know and learn, much like the engligh/metric measurement situation

ummm
that has something to do with spirituality, im sure of it

I would take up issue with Mr. Campbell on whether or not religion is NEEDED, if he hadn't died. We don't NEED myths to survive. The problem is that we humans use shorcuts...

A symbol here, an abbrev. there, an acronym over there and so on and so forth. Myths are a shortcut. They TELL us what is right, so we don't have to THINK ABOUT what is right.
That is bullshit. Thinking is what separates us from the rest of the animals.
It's a fight between those beasts that adhere to a METHOD OF DOUBT vs. those beasts that adhere to a METHOD OF AUTHORITY. If I had it my way, the latter method would be eradicated off the face of this earth.

everyone can see the oppressive elements of religion on television, but that doesn't mean religion is not possible without limiting reason! Please don't be swept away by emotions or the media, think for yourself.
You are right to have critisism on power structures, but without them it's difficult to organize. So i think we should not eradicate them but humanize them. You say you are against the method of authority... does that include management, leaders etc?
If you are interested in expanding your horizons on this topic and live in Europe I recommend http://www.taize.fr and talk with one of many Ph. D.'s over there that are well read in the area of philosophy and theology and STILL practice religion. Or just say: eradicate them and close a meaningfull conversation.
